Thursday's Prep Volleyball: W.F. West Falls to Elma

Elma set the tone early in Chehalis and never looked back, earning a 3-0 win over W.F. West in a nonleague volleyball match on Thursday.

“I think they did a good job of staying positive. A lot of the talk on the bench was real positive talk, I don’t think at any point they thought this was impossible,” W.F. West coach Emily Mora said. “We didn’t show up tonight, you can’t make as many errors as we were making and expect to win. The girls needed to do a better job of controlling on our side, and we didn’t. We didn’t quite show up like we needed to and because of that, you lose.”

Elma had a big lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-18 win. W.F. West started strong in the second set, leading 6-1. The Eagles went on a couple runs to get back into the set and take the lead, eventually winning 25-20.

The Bearcats fought hard in the third set, but Elma was able to prevail, 25-19, to take the match.

“It’s a real positive sign, I know we’ve got it in us, I’m not too concerned,” Mora said. “It’s preseason, we’re working out some kinks. We’ll be finalizing our roster here after this weekend. Weekend will be a good chance to get that last bit of play in before league and I’m still feeling very positive about league.”

Mora noted the play of Makenzie Moore in the third set, converting nine of her 12 kill attempts in the third set. Moore had 13 kills overall to lead the team, Ashlee Vadala recorded five kills and Ashlyn Whalen recorded 13 digs.

W.F. West (2-2) is back on the court on Saturday, playing in the Monarch Challenge tournament, hosted at Mark Morris in Longview.

“I thought we played terribly today, we struggled to put anything together,” Pe Ell coach Karie Cleveland said. “We played well in little spurts, but overall, just had a tough time putting things together. We are definitely better than we played today for sure.”

Napavine (4-0, 1-0) hosts Rainier on Tuesday in a league match, while Pe Ell (0-3, 0-1 league) will be on the court again on Saturday in the Raymond tournament.
