Posted

TOLEDO — Mossyrock was too powerful for Toledo on Thursday night, sweeping the Indians 3-0 here in Central 2B League volleyball action.

The first set was close throughout, with the Vikings taking a 25-18 win, then hitting their stride to win 25-14 and 25-11.

“We played well tonight. I was able to get quite a few girls in, quite a few different lineups, a lot of people contributing tonight,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “We have a range of girls from freshman to seniors and we’re seeing leadership from all of them so I was really pleased with their performance tonight.”

Mossyrocks’ Ava Nelson had 16 assists. Paige Moorcroft recorded nine kills and LeeRae Morales had 12 digs.

Toledo’s Leilani Cline-Maier had three kills and two digs, and Mya Ramirez and Shy-Anne Hill each had a team high five digs.

“I’m pretty proud of them because they met their goal. They were communicating a lot better than they did on Tuesday night,” Toledo coach Candace Maier said. “They were hustling and diving for the ball, which were all things that we worked on in practice. … I’m not unhappy right now.”

Mossyrock (3-0, 1-0 league) hosts Willapa Valley in a nonleague match Monday. Toledo (0-5, 0-1 league) hosts Kalama on Tuesday.

Adna Bounces Back With Win Over Rainier

ADNA — Adna bounced back from its Tuesday loss, sweeping Rainier 3-0 in a Central 2B League battle here Thursday night.

The Pirates came out strong early and took the first set 25-10. Adna was even more dominant in the second set, winning 25-9, and wrapped up the match in the third set, 25-11.

Adna coach Wendie Dotson was impressed with Katelyn Pine’s performance, saying she had a good all around game and recorded six aces to go along with 100 percent serving. Dotson also highlighted Kelsi Latimer, who had eight assists while setting well with consistent play.

Emma Manning recorded five kills and five aces, and Dotson said she did a good job at the net and the service line.

“At times, we’ve struggled with our serving,” Dotson said, noting that the Pirates served an impressive 97 percent against the Mountaineers. “We’ll take that and move forward and continue to progress and keep everything under control.”

Adna (2-2, 1-0) is back in action on Tuesday at Mossyrock.

Toutle Lake Trounces Onalaska

ONALASKA — Toutle Lake came to Onalaska and left with a 3-0 win in Central 2B League volleyball action here on Thursday night.

Toutle started off the night with a 25-13 first set win, followed by a 25-15 second set victory. The Ducks wrapped up the match in the third set, 25-9.

Onalaska coach Doug Abrahamson highlighted Phoebe Rich, saying she played well despite being sick, and recorded three stuff blocks.

“Toutle is really good. It was a growing game for us,” Abrahamson said. “I wasn’t upset. We improved and had a lot of practice passing.”

Onalaska (1-2, 0-1) travels to take on Wahkiakum at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Wahkiakum Downs Morton-White Pass

MORTON — Morton-White Pass played three close sets with Wahkiakum, but were swept 3-0 by the Mules here in Central 2B League volleyball action on Thursday.

Wahkiakum took the first set, 25-18, and won two more close sets — 25-19 and 27-25 — for the sweep.

“We stayed with them but couldn’t finish a game out strong,” MWP coach Tammy Kelly said. “The girls hustled the whole time. We were always just right there behind them.”

Carly King had 15 assists and was a perfect 15 of 15 serving for the Timberwolves, while Taylor Nilius had seven kills and Megan Hancock added six kills and two blocks.

MWP (3-1, 0-1 league) is back on the court on Tuesday at Pe Ell.

Tigers Pounce Pe Ell

NAPAVINE — The Tigers wasted little time securing their first league victory of the season here Thursday night in a Central 2B League contest versus Pe Ell. In their first league affair of the season Napavine dispatched the Trojans in straight, and efficient, sets by scores of 25-9, 25-7 and 25-8.

While the Tigers refused to allow the Trojans to reach double digit scoring on the night, Napavine coach Monica Dailey came away most impressed with her team’s offensive effort.

“If you have a good offense you don’t have to play defense as much,” pointed out Dailey.

Reigning C2BL MVP Mollie Olson had a solid night, with eight kills and nine aces on 100 percent serving.

“She has a jump serve so the ball has a lot of movement on it when she’s serving,” said Dailey. “It comes down at you hard and it’s moving, maybe up or down or side to side.”

Jordin Pruett added eight kills and six aces for the Tigers.

“Each of my girls, I tell them exactly where to serve and they do a pretty good job of it,” said Dailey, who explained that each serve is meant to exploit a perceived weakness in the defensive alignment.

Ashley Dickinson also dished nine assists and scooped three digs for Napavine.

“Our goal tonight was to stay consistently aggressive and to stay consistently communicative. Sometimes we struggle communicating with each other,” explained Dailey, who approved of her team’s pace versus the Trojans. “They didn’t let up one time.”

Napavine (4-0, 1-0 league) plays at Rainier on Tuesday. Pe Ell (0-3) hosts MWP on Tuesday.

Centralia Tames Grizzlies

HOQUIAM — Centralia outlasted the Grizzlies here Thursday night, taking three of five sets in a nonleague volleyball contest.

The match was a true back and forth happening with Centralia taking the first set by a score of 25-21, before dropping the second set by a reverse score of 21-25. Centralia came back in the third set to win 25-14 but then dropped the fourth frame by a tally of 19-25. However, in the fifth and final set the Tigers emerged with a 15-10 victory.

“I’d say that we were a little up and down but part of that was we tried some different rotations with tonight being our last nonleague game,” said Tiger coach Neil Sharp.

Some of those rotations, Sharp noted, weren’t quite up to snuff.

“But I was proud of the girls,” he said. “They stuck with it the whole time and we were able to pull out the win at the end.”

Kary Sathre led the Tiger attack with 21 digs, 13 kills and 17 or 19 service attempts, while Rachel Wilkerson added 10 kills, 11 digs and 18 of 19 serving.

“I thought she played a really good game for us,” said Sharp of Wilkerson. “She’s been working hard at practice and it looked like it paid off for her tonight.”

Also getting in on the fun for Centralia was McKenna Smith, who tallied 14 kills and three blocks; Joelle Mettler, who dished 34 assists; and Chelsea Petrino with eight kills.

Danika Jensen also notched eight digs for the Tigers.

“She gaves us a nice spark at the libero position tonight,” said Sharp of Jensen. “We had a nice balanced offense tonight, and defense too. We’re seeing that things are starting to come together at the right time.”

Centralia (6-4) will play in the Pierce County Invite at Washington High School on Saturday before beginning Evergreen 2A Conference play at Rochester on Tuesday.
