CATHLAMET — The Mules proved to be too much for the visiting Pirates here on Thursday, earning a sweep with set scores of 25-19, 27-25 and 25-16 in a Central 2B League volleyball match.
Adna coach Wendie Dotson said Anna Jones had a good night in the back row, serving aggressively while collecting three aces. Alyssa Davis served 100 percent with three aces and Maddie Kleemeyer did a good job of hitting and setting the ball for hitters.
“We didn’t win the match but the team played really consistently. We had some long rallies between the two teams and held our own for a while,” Dotson said. “They picked a spot or two where we were a little open and exposed us at times but we tried to correct it quickly. The team did a good job of keeping the momentum going and supporting each other.”
Adna (2-6, 1-3) hosts Toutle Lake on Tuesday in a league battle.
Mossyrock Sweeps Rainier
MOSSYROCK — The Vikings had all 12 players play against Rainier in a 3-0 sweep of a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.
Mossyrock won with set scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 26-24.
The Vikings welcomed back Shania Hadaller. In her first game after a knee injury, she served 6 of 6 with 10 assists.
“She came in and played really hard, I’m proud of her,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “She didn’t come in until the second set. She had a big impact on the game. That was the set we dominated in, the girls got up and were excited for her to play.”
Mossyrock also had Emily Edgar return to the lineup, returning from a bone chip on her ankle.
Payton Torrey had six kills and Andee Nelson served 12 of 13 with four aces, 18 digs and 11 kills. Faith Mulligan served a perfect 9 of 9 with 12 digs and two kills. Morgan Houghtelling added 19 assists and Jenny Brockway served 9 of 10 with two kills for the Vikings.
“Overall, there was a lot of energy when those girls came back into the lineup. They not only played well, the entire team played well and we had great crowd support,” Nelson said. “They understood what was going on as well. That got the girls into that set, there was a lot of excitement in the gym. They fed off that, the entire team had a great set there.”
Mossyrock (7-1, 5-0) travels to Toledo on Tuesday for a C2BL match.
Tumwater Tops Centralia in Three
TUMWATER — The Thunderbirds earned a sweep of Centralia with set scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-14 in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match here on Thursday.
Madison Stoeckler served 10 of 10 with 15 assists and 10 digs and Jadyn Hawley served 9 of 9 with six kills and 16 digs for the Tigers. Kennedy Strophy also served 9 of 9 with four kills and two blocks and Kylie Sharp tallied 14 digs.
“Tumwater played great. It’s always tough going to their place and playing Tumwater. They don’t let a lot of balls drop. As a team, you have got to be ready to play every point,” Centralia coach Marti Smith said. “It can be mentally and physically exhausting, especially when things aren't going well. It happened frequently tonight. In serve receive, we had a really tough night. It made it really tough to get into any offensive flow. We found ourselves on the defensive most of the night. It was definitely a match where we’ve got to do a better job of coming together.”
Centralia (3-5, 2-2) hosts W.F. West on Tuesday in a Swamp Cup battle.
Bearcats Roast Rochester in Four
W.F. West was able to adjust on the fly and capture a 3-1 victory over Rochester here on Thursday. The Beactas earned the 2A Evergreen Conference volleyball win with scores of 27-25, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-15.
After needing extra points to defeat the Warriors in the first set W.F. West dropped the second by eight points. Bearcats coach Emily Mora chalked that loss up to some overzealous play by her team as they employed a new rotation.
“We were really trying to do too much. We were trying to be too perfect and trying to make big plays when they weren’t really necessary. We needed to tighten up our game and play smart,” said Mora.
She also made sure to credit the effort of a tough Warriors squad.
“Rochster played really, really well and did a great job of figuring out where they had an opportunity,” added Mora.
Paytton Crawford did her best to get her fellow Bearcats involved with 31 assists, while Sophia DeTray led the team with eight kills. Faith Thomas tallied four aces from the service stripe in the win while Sydney VonMoos and Amelia Etue squirreled away five kills each. Payge Crawford added 24 digs to the W.F. West defense while Drea Brumfield registered two blocks.
Mora noted that she was pleased with the way Payge Crawford was utilized on offense.
“We’ve been working on plays to get the libero swinging more and she had 15 attempts at the ball,” explained Mora.
Rochester’s Kortney Kerbaugh had three aces and 11 kills and Bethany Hawes added 22 assists, 17 digs and four kills. Rochester coach Wendy Hawes noted Emily Morris playing well at outside hitter.
“We had some issues keeping our balls in the court. They played great defense but Chehalis has a giant front row,” Hawes said. “Everyone was hitting but they have a couple giants on their team. We just fell apart that fourth game, they didn’t play well in the second set but they came back in the third and fourth (sets).”
W.F. West (2-6, 2-2) will play at Centralia on Tuesday. Rochester (4-5, 0-4) hosts Aberdeen on Tuesday in an EvCo match.
Pe Ell Falls to North Beach
OCEAN SHORES — Pe Ell was no match for the Hyaks here on Thursday, falling in straight sets with scores of 25-9, 25-21 and 25-14 in a Pacific 2B League volleyball match.
Pe Ell coach Karie Cleveland was pleased with Kennedy Kephart and Ava Bush for making plays and setting the ball well for hitters.
“They did a lot of things we’ve been working on lately. It didn’t result in a win but they definitely improved today for sure,” Cleveland said.
Pe Ell (2-6, 1-2) hosts Northwest Christian (Lacey) on Tuesday in a league match.
Chinooks Blank Tigers
KALAMA — The Chinooks swept Napavine with a 3-0 victory in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on their home court Thursday night with set scores of 26-24, 25-9 and 25-20.
Vannie Fagerness, Madilyn Harrolle and Skyla Ettner all served 100 percent. Haily Murray had three stuff blocks with 12 kills and Sydney Purvis had nine kills on the night.
“I saw that the girls came out really strong in the first set but got a little nervous towards the end,” said Napavine coach Monica Dailey. “In the second set, we were making a lot of self inflicting mistakes, but we fought real hard and we had a lot stronger serving and a lot better blocking at the net.”
Napavine (5-4, 1-4) hosts Wahkiakum on Tuesday in a league contest.
Onalaska Downs Morton-White Pass in Four
ONALASKA — The Loggers dispatched the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves in four sets in a Central 2B League volleyball match here Thursday night with set scores of 26-24, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-15.
Onalaska’s Carmen Cleveland-Barrera had three stuff blocks with 10 kills and Dakotah Fuller had four kills. Morgan Hamilton and Eryn Duryea both had three kills with Duryea serving 16 of 16 and picking up 42 digs. Hannah James served 6 of 6 and Sophia Leal served 14 of 14 with 26 digs. Keiley Fickett was perfect on her passing, Kayla Osborne had 14 assists and Raelee Holmes had 10 assists on the night.
“We started out kinda slow the first two sets,” said Logger coach Terri Dalsted. “The last two sets, I changed up the rotation and that made all the difference. Our passing was perfect and we had great defense and communication through the whole match.”
MWP’s Katie Salguero had four blocks with nine kills and Shaylee Peters had 13 kills on the night. Chloe Kelly had 22 assists and Emily Haven also passed well.
“We stuck right with them the first two games but they had us on the last two,” said MWP coach Tammy Kelly.
Onalaska (6-3, 4-1) travels to Mossyrock next Thursday while MWP (0-8, 0-5) hosts Kalama in Morton on Tuesday.
