Thursday's Prep Volleyball: Bearcats Sweep Bobcats for First Win

W.F. West earned a sweep of Aberdeen with set scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-19 to earn their first win of the season in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match in Chehalis on Thursday.

Ashlyn Whalen led the Bearcats with 12 kills and Paytton Crawford added five kills and Sophia DeTray had four kills. Drea Brumfield recorded two blocks and Payge Crawford tallied 20 digs.

The Bearcats had an 18-8 deficit in the first set and were able to battle back and take the set.

“It was nice to see the girls pull that win out. We’re a very capable team, we’re getting better each game,” W.F. West coach Emily Mora said. “This is an OK place to be in league season. We have a good test for us next week, the girls will be going into those games more prepared. A win is always a nice confidence boost going into next week.”

Mora commended the play of Amelia Etue for being quick on the attack and setting up blocks and also Anna White for setting up blocks and recording a big block to shift momentum to W.F. West. Faith Thomas also had a key ace to help the Bearcats secure the win.

W.F. West (1-5, 1-1) travels to Black Hills on Tuesday before hosting Rochester on Thursday in EvCo matches.

Rochester Falls to Tumwater

ROCHESTER — The Warriors played three close sets but lost them all as Tumwater earned a 3-0 sweep of Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match.

The Thunderbirds won with set scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-21.

Rochester’s Lexie Sederberg-Jones had 11 kills, two stuff blocks and nine digs. Bethany Hawes tallied four aces and 16 assists and Emily Morris chipped in 12 digs and two kills. Emily Pickernell added three kills for the Warriors.

“All around, we played with tons of energy. We even had the lead in the first game,” Rochester coach Wendy Hawes said. “I’m proud of the girls and their play the rest of the season. It was a great fight. We were playing super intense, I’m looking forward to the rest of the games.”

Rochester (4-3, 0-2) travels to Centralia on Tuesday for a league contest.

Onalaska Takes Down Winlock

ONALASKA — The Loggers lost the first set but bounced back and won the next three sets to earn a 3-1 win against Winlock in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.

Winlock won the first set, 25-16. Onalaska rebounded and took the next three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-16.

Onalaska’s Raelee Holmes served 21-of-21 with 26 assists and Eryn Duryea had 19 kills, two block kills and 47 defensive digs. Carmen Cleveland-Barrera had five kills and served 13-of-14 and Morgan Hamilton chipped in eight kills and 29 digs.

Sophia Leal had 33 digs, Dakatoh Fuller recorded five kills and Hannah James tallied four kills. Hailey Nailon chipped in four kills for the Loggers.

“We were down a starter tonight. That first game, the girls were just working together to figure out the new rotation,” Onalaska coach Terri Dalsted said. “Once we got that figured out and started talking, we were able to come back and win the next three.”

Onalaska (4-3, 2-2) travels to Adna on Tuesday while Winlock (2-7, 0-3) hosts Kalama on Tuesday in a C2BL match.

Toledo Rolls Past Napavine

NAPAVINE — Toledo played well and earned a 3-0 sweep of Napavine in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.

The Indians won with set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-15. Stacie Spahr had seven kills and six digs and Rylie Pliler had five kills. Brynn Williams had 10 digs and Toledo coach Candace Maier commended Gracie Madill’s passing in serve receive and setting up the Toledo offense.

“They played really well. They communicated really well,” Maier said. “The first set was a little nervous but once they settled in, they worked well together. They did a good job.”

Napavine’s Sydney Purvis served 100 percent with 14 digs and Tanner Simpson also served 100 percent. Skyla Ettner was also perfect at the service stripe and Vannie Fagerness recorded 13 digs.

Toledo (7-0, 3-0) hosts Morton-White Pass on Tuesday while Napavine (5-2, 1-2) hosts Toutle Lake on Tuesday in a league contest.

Vikings Sail Past Chinooks

KALAMA — Mossyrock returned the favor to Kalama here on Thursday, earning a sweep of the Chinooks with set scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23 in a Central 2B League volleyball match.

The Chinooks swept the Vikings in Mossyrock just more than a week ago in a non-league match.

Mossyrock’s Faith Mulligan served 16-of-16 with 15 perfect passes, 16 digs and three assists. Payton Torrey served 8-of-9 with 22 digs and seven kills and Paige Houghtelling had three blocks for the Vikings.

Mossyrock’s Andee Nelson had 16 kills, 15 digs and served 15-of-17 and Morgan Houghtelling added 26 assists, 16 digs and served 11-of-13. Hailey Brooks had 11 digs and four kills and served 10-of-10.

Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson was pleased with the performance, especially Paige Hougtelling, a freshman, stepping in and having a great night blocking the best hitters for Kalama.

“She just came in and did her job. Her job was to get blocks, pay attention where their best hitters are and she did a good job of that,” coach Nelson said. “ It was impressive. It was a great all around victory for us.”

Mossyrock (5-1, 3-0) travels to Longview on Saturday for a tournament at R.A. Long and resumes league play on Tuesday against the Mules.

Black Hills Too Much for Centralia

TUMWATER — Centralia won the first set but Black Hills responded and won the next three sets to earn a 3-1 win in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match here on Thursday.

The Tigers were down in the first set 18-15 but after a timeout, were able to rally to a 25-23 first set win. Black Hills came back and won the next three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-14.

Evie Rooklidge had 19 digs and served 11-of-12 and Kylie Sharp chipped in 12 digs and served 100 percent. Madison Stoeckler recorded 10 digs and 16 assists, Hailey Brann had six kills and Kennedy Strophy served a perfect 12-of-12.

“In the first set, I was really proud of how the girls played. They brought a lot of energy,” Centralia coach Marti Smith said. “Defensively, we were playing exactly the way I wanted us to play. We made Black Hills uncomfortable, making a lot of errors. Serving was a big key in our comeback, we kept fighting for every point. It was a game plan that we wanted. Black Hills, give them credit, they made the adjustments they needed to make and we didn’t respond well to those adjustments.”

The Tigers also had an injury during the match that forced some players to play in positions they weren’t used to. Smith highlighted the inspiring defense of Rooklidge in the second set as the team was able to rally around her, even in the loss.

“It’s not going to go our way some nights,” Smith said. “How are you going to respond when things aren’t going their way? They lift each other up.”

Centralia (2-4, 1-1) travels to Longview on Saturday to compete in a tournament at R.A. Long. The Tigers resume EvCo play on Tuesday at home against Rochester.

Wishkah Valley Defeats Oakville in Three

ABERDEEN — Oakville played a solid match but couldn’t earn the win as Wishkah Valley won with set scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-17 in a 1B Coastal Division volleyball match here on Thursday.

Makayla Roberts recorded two aces, Alexis Starr had two aces and Shelby Petty tallied four aces and two kills for the Acorns.

“They did amazing tonight. They really worked together as a team on calling their balls and really getting down on the floor and playing their hearts out,” Oakville coach Shawna Howe said. “They worked really hard and I’m really proud of them.”

Oakville (0-5, 0-3) hosts Mary M. Knight on Tuesday in a league game.

Rainier Tops Morton-White Pass in Four

RANDLE — Rainier fell in the first set but recovered and won the next three sets for a 3-1 win against Morton-White Pass in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.

MWP won the first set, 25-22. Rainier bounced back and won the next three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-14.

Shaylee Peters had nine kills, two blocks and four aces and Katie Salguero added 11 kills. Chloe Kelly tallied 20 assists and MWP coach Tammy Kelly noted the passing of Emmalee Hazen.

“We need to be more consistent. Defensively, we’re starting to play a little bit better,” coach Kelly said. “We had to change our lineup a few times because of injuries, but we’re kind of getting our rotations down now.”

MWP (0-6, 0-3) travels to Toledo on Tuesday while Rainier (5-3, 1-2) hits the road to face Mossyrock on Thursday in a league match.
