ELLENSBURG — Toledo’s Reece Wallace scored 29 points but it wasn’t enough, as Kittitas earned a 78-67 win over Toledo in a nonleague boys basketball game at Central Washington University here on Thursday.
Kittitas, the defending 2A State Champions, were led by sophomore guard Brock Ravet with 31 points.
“(Fano) Arceo-Hansen is one of our best defenders. He held him to 31,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “He’s the real deal. He’s the best player I’ve seen in a while.”
Junior Arroyo added 10 points for Toledo.
Toledo didn’t get off to a good start, trailing Kittitas 25-16 after the first quarter. The Indians only scored 10 points in the second quarter to allow the Cougars a 50-26 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Toledo started chipping away at the lead and cut the advantage to 61-45 after three quarters. The Indians were able to cut the lead to single digits in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t quite close the gap.
“We fought back in the second half. We could have rolled over and we got it all the way back down to 4 or 5. We were one offensive rebound put back, any play at that point could have changed the whole dynamic of the game,” Fallon said. “They’re good, we just couldn’t get over the hump. I’m pleased, that’s the state champs. We were within striking distance, it only takes one at the right moment.”
Toledo (7-1, 5-0) faces Asotin at 3 p.m. today in a nonleague game in Ellensburg.
Winlock Dominates Ocosta
WINLOCK — Winlock’s Carter Whitehead scored 23 points to lead the Cardinals to a 80-41 win over Ocosta in a nonleague boys basketball game here on Thursday.
Dawson Hall scored 18 points and Bryce Cline added 14 points and eight rebounds. Nicholas Patching was the other Cardinal in double digits with 10.
Winlock had their entire arsenal working against Ocosta, shooting 49.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Wildcats 41-24.
“Everything (was working). Whitehead was hot the whole night, we’ve been waiting for that,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “Ocosta had a game last night that went into OT. They were gassed getting off the bus. We were able to get on them early and we came out in the third and really put them away.”
Winlock led 19-10 after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 43-24 at halftime. The Cardinals put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring Ocosta 20-4 to build an insurmountable lead for the fourth quarter.
“We just talked at halftime about keeping our energy up. They flying around and raising havoc,” Bamer said. “It was a fun night for us. We shot the ball well and did a good job of attacking the rim and were fighting for rebounds. I’m pretty pleased.”
Winlock (6-2, 3-2) is off until after winter break, hosting Morton-White Pass on Tuesday, Jan. 2, in a Central 2B League game.

Toledo Downs Asotin
ELLENSBURG — Toledo’s Kal Schaplow scored 18 points to lead the Indians to a 43-35 win over Asotin in a nonleague girls basketball game on the campus of Central Washington University here on Thursday.
Alyssa Ewers added seven points and Anna Tauscher scored six points for Toledo.
Asotin led 7-0 to start the game, but Toledo battled back and led 13-10 after one quarter. The Indians locked down on defense in the second quarter, holding the Panthers to just three points to take a 23-13 lead at halftime.
Asotin tried to start a comeback in the third quarter and cut the Toledo lead down to 33-27 going into the fourth quarter. Toledo used their defense in the fourth quarter to hold off Asotin for the win.
“We really buckled down our defense and rotation. We rotated well and communicated, our best game so far this year with rotation and communication,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We were down 7-0 to start the game. Once we got settled down, we were able to play our game.
It’s an awesome experience, the atmosphere, being on a college court. I think the girls really enjoyed it.”
Toledo (6-2, 4-1) plays again today against Cle Elum at 1:30 p.m. in Ellensburg.
