Thursday's Prep Baseball: Whitehead Walks Off Onalaska Over Toledo

ONALASKA — Carter Whitehead hit an RBI single to bring home Kyle Hamilton for the game winning run in a 4-3 win over Toledo in a Central 2B League baseball game here on Thursday.

Tanner McLean had a solid day on the mound, coming on in relief and throwing the final 3 ⅔ innings, allowing just one hit while retiring the final 10 batters of the game.

Hamilton was 3-for-3 with a double and Ashton Haight, Cole Christensen and AJ Volk all had hits for the Loggers.

Brannon Guyor pitched all six innings for the Indians, allowing six hits and one earned run. Matt Stavig was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI and Hunter Eaton added two hits including a double and a RBI.

Toledo scored a run in the first, third and fourth innings for a 3-0 lead. The Loggers bounced back and scored a run in the fourth before two runs in the fifth tied the game at three.

Hamilton had a leadoff double and came home on Whitehead’s single for the walk off victory.

“Played good, Toledo played well too. They had a couple errors early, they made some good plays,” Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley said. “It was a good ball game. We played well and never gave up. I’m pretty proud, they battled and got a W.”

Onalaska (3-2, 2-1) travels to Mossyrock on Monday for a C2BL game while Toledo (0-5-1, 0-4) hosts Elma on Tuesday in a non-league game.

Pirates Shoot Down Ducks

ADNA — The Pirates’ bats were working against Toutle Lake here on Thursday in a 12-2 win in six innings in a Central 2B League baseball game.

Adna collected 13 hits, including five triples. Chance Fay was 2-for-3 with a double and Camden Ryan was 2-for-3 with a triple and a RBI. Abel Ingle was 2-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBI.

Sawyer Burdick, Trevor Minkoff and Cole Fay each had a RBI triple for the Pirates.

Burdick started on the mound and threw five innings, allowing two hits while striking out 10 batters. Levi Gates pitched the sixth inning and struck out two batters.

Adna scored in the bottom of the second but Toutle Lake gained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. The Pirates plated five runs in the third to gain the lead for good and padded the lead with two runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to end the game.

“We saw the ball well tonight and swung it well which was nice. We haven’t quite done that early on in the season yet, we did tonight,” Adna coach Jon Rooklidge said. “We did it against a decent pitcher so that was nice to see. We hit the ball throughout the lineup, that’s a pretty good day.”

Adna (4-1, 3-1) hosts Columbia-White Salmon on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a non-league game.

Kalama Crushes T-Wolves

MORTON — Kalama made themselves at home in East Lewis County on Thursday as they earned a 23-2 victory over the Timberwolves in Central 2B League baseball play.

The Chinooks peppered 22 hits along the way and turned in an errorless defensive effort.  Chase Staup tossed a complete game for Kalama, scattering four hits and two runs over five innings.

Catcher Hayden Wilson whacked a pair of home runs for Kalama including a grand slam in the fourth inning that capped the scoring on the day.

“They are legit. They are fundamentally sound on defense and they came out hitting from the start of the game and they didn’t stop. They’ve got bats up and down their lineup,” said Morton-White Pass coach Pete Dayton.

Mason Higdon had a double for Morton-White Pass and Carter Johnson drove in a run with a single. Dylan Hamre and Conner Dill added a single each to the T-Wolves tally.

Dayton noted that his team is still finding their way in the early going.

“We’ve been mixing and matching defense all year based on who’s pitching. We’re just trying to get kids more comfortable because a lot of them are being asked to do things that they’ve haven’t done before,” Dayton said.

Morton-White Pass (0-4) will travel to Naches for a game on Monday.
