W.F. West opened the season on a high note, defeating Montesano 4-2 in a non-league girls tennis match in Chehalis on Thursday.

In singles, W.F. West’s top player Sydney Cameron won in straight sets against Sophie Barre, 6-1, 6-1. Montesano’s Anna Ayres took down Sadie Jerome, 6-2, 6-0, and Kathryn Thomas defeated W.F. West’s Sophia Arceo, 6-1, 6-3.

The Bearcats swept the doubles matches. W.F. West’s top pair of Joelle Chung and Jisu Han won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, as did No. 2 duo Stephanie Drummond and Tianna Jeffries, 6-1, 6-2. W.F. West’s Lauren Mason and Lauren Balmelli made quick work of Molly Ellis and Shelby Dilley, 6-1, 6-0.

“I thought Sydney played well and doubles teams all played well. We have things to work on and get better at,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “Our second and third singles players, they were a little bit nervous and weren’t quite where they needed to be. I’m not disappointed with them and they have an opportunity to get better.”

State noted the competition for the No. 2 and 3 singles spots, saying there are several kids vying for those positions and that challenges throughout the year will help figure out who fills those spots best.

W.F. West (1-0) travels Timberline on Friday for a non-league match.
