Centralia and Aberdeen couldn’t find the back of the net in regulation but the Bobcats did just enough in the shootout to earn a 1-0 win in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer game at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.
Tiger coach Henry Gallanger noted the excellent job of goalkeeper Bailea Brown, making some big saves in regulation, overtime and shootout.
Gallanger also highlighted Aaliyah Corona working hard for the Tigers at forward and creating chaos and scoring chances throughout the night.
“I thought collectively, in the second half, the players worked much harder than the first half. We created more opportunities in the second half,” Gallanger said. “We had a couple chances in the run of play but couldn’t capitalize. In PK’s, our players have got to bang those home. Defensively, we did a really good job of holding them.”
Centralia (1-10, 1-5) hits the road to take on Black Hills on Tuesday.
Tenino Takes Down Elma
TENINO — The Beavers started slow but picked up steam throughout the match to secure a 3-1 win against Elma in a 1A Evergreen League girls soccer game here on Thursday.
Iris Campesino scored in the 12th minute off of a corner kick by Brieanna Dell for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Dell found the back of the net on an assist by Grace Vestal in the 56th minute and Morgan Miner scored on another assist by Vestal in the 66th minute. Elma was able to ruin the clean sheet chances with a goal in the 72nd minute, as Janessa Sample scored off a corner kick by Jillian Bieker.
Abby Severse made three saves in net for the Beavers. Tenino outshot Elma, 20-7.
“It’s tough, I definitely didn’t feel like it was our best performance. I don’t know if it was the crazy rain or the emotional high of beating Montesano on Tuesday, we just didn’t play like ourselves at the start,” Tenino coach Kevin Schultz said. “We settled down and controlled the game. We had 15 shots in the first half, just weren’t able to score. We talked at halftime, calmed down and had those two goals go in. They had a corner kick score to ruin the clean sheet, but once we settled down, we played better.”
Schultz highlighted the defensive play of Alivia Hunter and Andee Schaffran, who literally bled for the Beavers in the win. He also noted Vestal and Megan Letts for flying all over the field and creating chances for the Beavers.
Tenino (11-0-1, 6-0) hosts South Bend/Raymond on Tuesday in a league game.
Rochester Falls to Black Hills
ROCHESTER — The Warriors improved from the first time they faced Black Hills but still couldn’t pull out a victory in a 4-0 loss in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer game here on Thursday.
Black Hills started the scoring in the 10th minute on a goal by Naliyah Navarrete. The Wolves added another goal in the 25th minute by Kaeli Ploettner for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Marsaiah Navarrete scored in the 45th minute and Cassady MacWhorter recorded the final tally of the game in the 67th minute.
Rochester goalkeeper Madison Bates made four saves in the loss. Black Hills outshot the Warriors, 8-2.
“I thought they battled really well today. It was really positive, we had many offensive opportunities,” Rochester coach Robert McFadden said “The last time we played them, we were really stifled. This was a huge improvement. We had great connecting passes and I’m proud of the way they played.”
McFadden commended the defensive play of Jessa Lenzi, stopping many Black Hills’ attacks after converting from forward to defense this season.
Rochester (1-10-1, 0-6) hosts Tumwater on Tuesday.
Tumwater Blanks W.F. West
TUMWATER — Tumwater’s Hallie Bergford scored a goal and assisted on another in a 2-0 win against W.F. West in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer game here on Thursday.
It was scoreless after the first half but the T-Birds got on the board in the 50th minute on a goal by Bergford and added one more goal on the final play of the game with an assist by Bergford.
W.F. West goalkeeper Aeryn Elder had a phenomenal game, making about 15 saves in the losing effort.
“We did pretty good in the first half, minimizing their opportunities. Once they got that first goal, we had to push and that opened it up for them,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “Bella Landers, Cassy Schilter had good games for us on defense tonight. Tumwater is good, there’s a reason they’re undefeated in league. We were much better this time around, we played better defense than the first time around so we’ve seen some improvement from a couple weeks ago.”
W.F. West (8-3-1, 3-3) takes on Aberdeen on Tuesday in Chehalis.
