Thursday's Girls Basketball: Pirates Edge Indians

TOLEDO — Payton Aselton scored 28 points to lead the Pirates to a 55-44 win over Toledo in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Thursday.

Ruby Bower added 12 points for Adna.

Toledo’s Stacie Spahr had a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Kal Schaplow added 13 points and eight boards.

The Pirates shot 43 percent from the field while Toledo shot just 29 percent.

Toledo led 15-14 after one quarter, but Adna regrouped and took a 24-22 lead at halftime.

Adna created some separation in the third quarter, outscoring Toledo 16-8 to lead 40-30 going into the final frame, where the PIrates were able to hold off a Toledo comeback for the win.

“Adna played really good defense like they always do and our shots didn’t fall, but I thought (Greenlee) Clark and (Marina) Smith came in and gave us a good spark off the bench as freshmen,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We went cold and didn’t shoot well. When you fall, you’ve got to get back up. You can’t hang your head. We’ve still got a lot of basketball left. They’ll be ready.”

Adna (12-4, 5-1) hosts Napavine on Tuesday while Toledo (11-5, 4-2) travels to Randle to take on Morton-White Pass on Tuesday for a C2BL game.

Mossyrock Uses Big Fourth Quarter to Power Past Morton-White Pass

MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock outscored Morton-White Pass 17-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away and earn a 53-38 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Thursday.

Heather Edgar led all scorers with 21 points. Andee Nelson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Madison Vigre also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Hannah Smathers led MWP with 17 points and Jacie Dunlap added 13 points.

Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft praised the defensive play of Teaguen Weise, guarding Dunlap in the second half and playing solid defense.

The key to the game was free throws, as Nelson made all six free throws she shot and Edgar was 9 of 12 from the line to help Mossyrock preserve the win in the fourth quarter.

It was a close game for the first three quarters, with the Vikings leading 36-34 before Mossyrock’s big final frame.

Mossyrock (6-8, 4-2) travels to Castle Rock on Saturday for a non-league game. MWP (1-14, 0-6) hosts Mary M. Knight in Morton at 5:30 p.m on Saturday in a non-league contest.

Tigers Mauled By Mules

NAPAVINE — Wahkiakum held Napavine to three points in the first half to cruise to a 64-19 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Thursday.

Sydney Purvis led the Tigers with eight points and Riley Beeson added four points.

Jansi Merz led all scorers with 12 points and Macie Elliott added 11 points. Paige Mace was also in double figures with 10 points for the Mules.

It was all Wahkiakum on Thursday night, shooting 40 percent of the field while the Tigers made just seven field goals.

The Mules led 27-2 after one quarter and kept it going in the second quarter for a 44-3 lead at halftime, allowing Wahkiakum to cruise to victory in the second half.

“Wahkiakum came out tonight and dominated us from the very beginning. Wahkiakum is a team on a mission,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “They were well coached and prepared. Our kids learned a lot from a great team like Wahkiakum.”

Napavine (5-11, 2-4) travels to Adna on Tuesday for a C2BL contest.

Hall Leads Cardinals Past Eagles



WINLOCK — Addison Hall scored 24 points to lead Winlock to a 52-25 win over Three Rivers Christian in a non-league girls basketball game here on Thursday.

Hall had a double-double by grabbing 14 rebounds. Karlie Jones scored nine points and picked eight pockets and Jenna Jones also recorded nine points for the Cardinals.

Kamryn Wright scored 12 points to lead Three Rivers Christian.

The Cardinals made 20 field goals compared to Three Rivers Christian’s 11 made field goals. WInlock also dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Eagles 44-25.

Winlock jumped out to a 11-5 lead after one quarter and expanded the advantage to 24-9 at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, with the Cardinals outscoring the Eagles 28-16 to cruise to the win.

“Addison was tough for them to stop. We got everyone in the game,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “We picked up our pressure defense and they had a hard time handling that. We were pretty aggressive offensively and I think things are starting to flow offensively.”

Winlock (4-11, 1-5) travels to Kalama on Tuesday for a Central 2B League game.

Onalaska Falls Short Against Rainier

ONALASKA — The Loggers put up a good fight against Rainier here on Thursday, but came up just short in a 38-33 loss in a Central 2B League girls basketball game.

Callie Lawrence led Onalaska with 11 points. Eryn Duryea added eight points and 12 rebounds and Alex Cleveland-Barrera led the Loggers with 15 rebounds.

Kaeley Schultz tallied 20 points to lead the Mountaineers. Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy praised the defensive play of Cierra Russ, guarding Schultz and holding her to one of her lowest scoring totals of the season.

“I think they played great. They played with a lot of heart and their attitude was excellent. They followed the game plan perfectly,” McCoy said. “We held them well below their average and threw a lot of different defenses at them. Russ did an excellent job on Schultz.”

McCoy also noted the defensive play of Adalee Sabin on Faith Boesch, holding her to just four points.

Onalaska led 14-5 after one quarter but Rainier recovered and tralied just 19-17 at halftime. The Mountaineers gained a 25-24 going into the final frame, where Rainier was able to hold on due to some poor free throw shooting by the Loggers.

“It came down to free throws. We’ve got to be better at free throws,” McCoy said. “We win or lose games at the free throw line is true for us right now.”

McCoy also made sure to praise the play of Duryea, saying she was doing it all for the Loggers on Thursday.

Onalaska (9-7, 2-4) travels to Toutle Lake on Tuesday for a league game.

Seagulls Fly By Trojans

RAYMOND — Raymond’s Kyra Gardner was too much for Pe Ell here on Thursday as the Seagulls won 62-33 in a Pacific 2B League game here on Thursday.

Gardner scored a game-high 22 points and Hannah Miller added 18 points.

Charlie Carper led the Trojans with 13 points and nine rebounds and Katie Davis added six points.

Raymond shot 45 percent from the field while Pe Ell made just 11 field goals.

The Seagulls led 14-7 after one quarter and kept the momentum going in the second quarter to lead 35-14 at halftime to cruise to the win in the second half.

“Tonight, we were a lot more aggressive on the offensive end. We’re getting better but the score may not reflect that. The girls are taking what we’re working on in practice and starting to do it in the game,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “We’re looking to shoot the ball and our goal was to be patient. We didn’t get that many shots up but I’m really proud of our girls for being a lot more patient. We took another step towards where I believe this team needs to be.”

Pe Ell (3-12, 3-10) hosts Ilwaco on Saturday in a P2BL game.
