Centralia played their first match of the season, and fell to Columbia River 4-2 in a nonleague girls tennis matchup in Centralia on Thursday.

In singles, Centralia’s Claire Davis defeated Truly Rylander, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.

“Claire showed a lot of grit and determination during that first set,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “After the downpour, she came back to dominate the second set. After she adjusted to the wind and the elements and fought back, she was hitting the ball very well.”

Rachel Wilkerson fell to Columbia River’s Faith Grisham in straight sets and Sarah Rodeck topped Centralia’s Ruth Hopkins, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

On the doubles side, Centralia’s No. 1 pair of Hannah Jeffries and Taviana Keahey defeated Natalie Black and Sophie Skimas, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Columbia River’s Tabitha Raynor and Sydney Ball took down Centralia’s Abbie Hopkins and Megan LeDuc in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Centralia’s Sophie Hansen and Brynna Rooklidge fell to Lauden Huyah and Marta Larson, 6-0, 6-0.

“This was a good loss. We played a good team, so now we have time to correct some things and our level of tennis will just keep improving,” Keahey said. “I’m excited about this team and this season. I just wish there were more sunny days; even cloudy days would be nice.”

Centralia (0-1) travels to Tumwater to take on Black Hills on Wednesday, April 12 before hosting Aberdeen on Friday, April 14.

W.F. West Tops River Ridge

LACEY — W.F. West and River Ridge made up their match from earlier this week, but still had two matches rained out as the Bearcats still earned the win 4-0 in a nonleague girls tennis matchup here on Thursday.

W.F. West’s Sydney Cameron won her match in No. 1 singles, defeating Natalia Arroyo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

“I thought Sydney played well. She played exchange student from spain, and she got behind right away,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “The girl really liked it when you hit with pace. She just changed her gameplan with speeds and spin and heights, the other girl started making mistakes.”

Lexi Akins won her match against River Ridge’s Madison Lye, 6-0, 6-2. W.F. West’s Tina Chen was tied with Betty Mie at a set a piece, but the match was rained out before a winner was decided.

In doubles, W.F. West’s Megan Wilks and Mya Davis defeated Sarah Park and Leija Jaksac, 6-2, 6-1. Morgan Lakey and Joelle Chung picked up the win for the Bearcats against Caitlin Yenne and Madelynn Retzlas, 6-4, 6-0.

The third Bearcat doubles pair of Kiara Steen and Ashley Werner were up 1-0 on sets after coming from behind to win a tiebreaker 7-5 to take the first set, but their match against Alana Cledes and Emma Dyplov was rained out before the conclusion.

W.F. West (3-1) will begin league play after spring break, facing Tumwater in a makeup match in Tumwater on April 11, and will head back to Tumwater on April 14 for a EvCo matchup with Black Hills.
