Summer Baseball: Vancouver Drops I-5 Toyota

The Vancouver pitching was too much for I-5 Toyota at Wheeler Field on Tuesday as the Cardinals earned a 10-6 win in a senior legion baseball league game.

Drew Rose earned the start on the mound and pitched the first four innings. Gabe O’Neil came on in relief in the fifth inning and pitched the rest of the way.

At the plate, Jared Winters had two hits and two runs and Teegan Zillyet had three hits and two RBI. Max Taylor tallied three hits and two RBI and Brit Lusk hit an RBI single in the first inning.

I-5 Toyota took a 2-1 lead after the first inning but Vancouver tied the game with one run in the third inning. The Cardinals pulled away in the fifth and sixth innings with four runs in each inning.

I-5 Toyota struck out 10 times against Vancouver and allowed 16 hits.

“I think we were a little tired coming off the trip to Missoula. Vancouver has the best pitching in our league, three of them are really good,” I-5 Toyota coach Tommy Grunenfelder said. “We battled OK at the plate, we just couldn’t get the clutch hit. We struck out 10 times which means we are only making them make 11 plays. We need to do a better job of putting the ball in play.”

I-5 Toyota (9-7, 3-1 league) will play in the Subway Classic at Wheeler Field this Thursday through Sunday. Their opponents on Thursday and Friday are to be determined, but both games will be at 7 p.m.
