Summer Baseball: Rashoff Hits Walk Off Single to Help Renegades Earn Split

Olympia started off a summer league baseball doubleheader with a win over the I-5 Jeep Renegades, but the Renegades rebounded in Game 2 to salvage a split at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis on Wednesday.

In Game 2, the Renegades trailed but were able to comeback this time and win 6-5 on a walk off RBI single by Kaleb Rashoff.

Bennett started on the mound and threw four innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits while striking out seven batters.

At the plate, Jaiyden Camoza had two hits and two runs and Cade Haller added two runs.

Josiah Johnson had a hit, an RBI and two runs and Bennett added a hit and an RBI.

The Renegades took an early 3-0 lead after one inning. Olympia answered in the third inning with five runs to take the lead.

Olympia’s lead held up until the fifth inning, as Camoza led off with a single followed by a Haller walk. Johnson hit an RBI single to bring home Camoza, then Bennett hit a single to bring home Haller and tie the game. Two batters later, Rashoff hit a single to bring home the game-winning run.

“The second game, we did a nice job of throwing strikes and attacking strike zone and competing,” Renegades coach Bryan Bullock said. “Coming from behind to win in the fifth, I thought the kids worked hard and played hard in both games. It was a good learning experience.”

Olympia won Game 1, 7-6. Luke Bennett had two hits and two RBIs and Kaelin Hazen added an RBI single.

The Renegades struggled to find their form on the mound which allowed free passes for Olympia, including scoring three runs in the first inning without registering a hit.

“We struggled to throw strikes. After that first inning, Brit (Lusk) settled in and made some nice adjustments,” Bullock said. “We battled and overcame a rough start, but we gave up too many free bases.”

Olympia led 3-2 after one inning and scored three runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Bennett had an RBI single in the fifth inning as the Renegades scored two runs, but the comeback came up just short.

The Renegades are off until next Thursday, July 5, hosting River Ridge at 6 p.m. in Chehalis.

Bad Fifth Inning Dooms Centralia Against River Ridge

LACEY — Centralia Titus-Will played a solid game except for the fifth inning, allowing River Ridge to score four runs and earn a 5-3 win in summer baseball action here on Wednesday.

Cameron Cabrera threw all six innings for Centralia, allowing five runs on four hits. Cabrera was cruising until the fifth inning, holding Olympia to just one hit during the first four innings.

“He threw very well and deserved a better outcome than he got,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said.

At the plate, Zack Rone was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Dominick Aguirre was also 2 for 3. Derek Beairsto hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Centralia.

Centralia scored a run in each the second and fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. River Ridge took the lead with the 4-run fifth inning and added a run in the sixth to insure the win.

“Overall, we played very well defensively. Other than that one inning, up until that point, we were playing very well,” Ashmore said. “At the plate, we swung the bat better and executed some things but we have quite a bit to work on.”

Centralia is back on the diamond on Thursday, traveling to Tumwater for a 6 p.m. game against Black Hills.

Tuesday’s Results

RBI, Lower Columbia Split Doubleheader

LONGVIEW — Lower Columbia Competitive Athletics won the first game, but the Rural Baseball Inc. Dirtbags bounced back with a win in the second game to salvage a split in a summer baseball doubleheader here on Tuesday.

Lower Columbia won Game 1, 6-2. Bubbles Cantrell pitched all six innings for the Dirtbags, allowing three earned runs and five hits while striking out nine batters.

“Bubbs just wasn’t getting the calls on the corners, no matter the corner he tried,” RBI coach Jordan Nailon said. “I could tell he was a little frustrated and that came to a head when the defensive miscues began to pile up.”

At the plate, Cantrell and Aaron Eklund each had a hit and Ryan Pedersen was 2 for 4.

Lower Columbia plated a run in the second and third frames for a 2-0 advantage. RBI scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game, but the Athletics scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.

“We made decent contact in that first game but we just couldn’t find a hole in the cheesecloth,” Nailon said. “Their pitchers did a good job pounding the outside corner and keeping us guessing on their offspeed stuff.”

The Dirtbags were able to bounce back in Game 2 with a 7-5 victory. AJ Volk was 2 for 3 with a stolen base, a walk and run. Seth Butler had a 2-RBI double in the seventh to give the Dirtbags the lead for good.

Pedersen had a hit, two walks, a run and an RBI sacrifice fly and Erik Cervantes was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

On the mound, Daniel Fagerness came on in relief and pitched four innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five batters.

“Our guys responded well after getting punched in the mouth a little in the first game,” Nailon said. “They found a way to get themselves inspired in the dugout and started talking positively to each other rather than living in the negative space in their own heads.”

After Lower Columbia scored a run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead, RBI responded with four runs in the third inning to take the lead. The Dirtbags scored three runs in the seventh, sparked by Eklund with a pinch-hit single to get a rally going for RBI.

“It was a great day for AJ Volk at the plate and in the field where he made a great play deep in the 5.5 hole to throw a batter out at first base. His glove has been there all year long and his bat is really starting to heat up at the right time.”

RBI is back on the field on Thursday, facing Willapa Harbor at 6 p.m. in a league doubleheader at Riverdale Field in Raymond.
