Saturday's Girls Basketball: Trojans Drop Life Christian in Final Seconds

Posted

PE ELL — The Trojans found their way to the free throw line with regularity here Saturday night with mixed results against Life Christian academy.

Luckily for the home team, they sank the freebies that counted as they defeated the Eagles 48-45 with a last second comeback in their Pacific 2B League girls basketball contest.

Trailing by one point with 1.7 seconds left in the game Charlie Carper came down with an offensive rebound and drew a foul as she recoiled back toward the hoop for what would have been a game-winning shot attempt. In a fit of frustration a Life Christian player reacted by slamming the ball on the floor and subsequently drew a technical foul.

With back-to-back fouls in the books the Trojans took turns at the line. First, Carper sank her two attempts. Then, Kammi Hill stepped up and dropped in a pair of shots at the charity stripe that were awarded for the technical foul.

When the Eagles came up empty in their ensuing end-of-the-game scramble, that was the ball game.

“It was exciting,” deadpanned Pe Ell coach Randy Driver.

The Trojans shot 28 percent from the field in the game while knocking down 17 of 33 free throws. Carper led Pe Ell with a 20-point and 15-rebound double-double. She also posted five steals, two assists, and one block in the win.

“She had an excellent game. Her best one of the year,” said Driver. “She was just kind of feeling it and I’d told her that she needed to step up her scoring when Anikka Mason fouled out early in the fourth quarter.”

Driver noted that Kammi Hill also performed admirably when she stepped in to take over at point guard for Mason. Mason finished the game with 9 points and Hall notched 7.

“Sadie Howard had a good defensive game,” added Driver. “She had 6 defensive rebounds and she took a real momentum shifting charge late in the fourth quarter. That charge really got the girls fired up.”

Pe Ell (7-6, 7-4 league) will host Raymond on Thursday.
