Saturday's District Volleyball: Napavine Falls to Kalama in District Championship

Posted

ADNA — Kalama showed why they won the regular season league title here on Saturday, sweeping Napavine 3-0 in the 2B District 4 Championship game.

Kalama won with set scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-18.

“I would say Kalama had their best game of the season on Saturday, they played well and were pretty flawless, it was hard to find holes in the defense,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “We weren’t at the top of our game, we struggled getting the ball to our target. When you don’t get the ball to the net, it’s hard to get your offense going. They are a great team and they utilized all of them (great hitters).”

Jordin Pruett was perfect serving with nine kills and 11 digs, and Mollie Olson added 16 kills and seven digs for the Tigers. Ada Williams was perfect serving with eight assists, Ashley Dickinson contributed 15 assists and Melissa Lee was also 100 percent serving to go along with 13 digs and four kills.

Even with the loss, the Tigers are in the state tournament, which begins on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Brewster on court five at the Yakima Sundome.

“It sucks to lose no matter what and the girls aren’t used to that, it is what it is,” Dailey said. “They will come back from it and work hard at state and hopefully have a successful run at state.”

Mossyrock Finishes Third At Districts

ADNA — Mossyrock earned wins over Life Christian and Toutle Lake here on Saturday, earning third place at the 2B District 4 Volleyball tournament.

Mossyrock faced Life Christian in the morning match, winning 25-18, 25-19 and 25-13.

Paige Moorcroft recorded 19 kills, Stephanie Fried had seven kills and Heather Edgar and Andee Nelson each had three kills. Lainee Grose, Faith Mulligan and Ava Nelson each were perfect serving and Jamie Carlson tallied 20 digs.

“We didn’t know a lot, but they were first in their league, so we expected a good game from them,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “They are a good hitting team, but we did a good job serving tough at them to stay in system. They had some tough hitters in the front row, but if we can keep the ball in bounds and get them out of system, we’re successful and we did a good job of that.”

The morning victory set up a third place showdown with Toutle Lake, with the Vikings winning in four, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17.

Moorcroft again led the team in kills with 18 and Fried added 15 kills along with Andee Nelson’s seven kills. Ava Nelson added 41 assists and Carlson recorded 20 digs and was 100 percent serving, as was teammate Grose.

“They are a tough team with a long history of being successful and are a great defensive team,” Nelson said. “We proved to be a little more offensive that day. We hit the ball well and handled some momentum changes well.”

Even though Mossyrock came up short against Kalama in the semifinals, they bounced back to take third place, which is not easy in this district.

“I feel very good, we have a very strong league and district. Although we came up third, we can play with anyone in our league,” Nelson said.

The Vikings begin the state tournament Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Darrington on court one at the Yakima Sundome.

“I don’t know a whole lot about Darrington, but no matter who we’re playing, they made it to state, so they’ve got to be a good team,” Nelson said. “Our expectation is to be well prepared and play our game, we don’t worry too much about our opponents.”

W.F. West’s Season Ends at Districts

VANCOUVER — W.F. West couldn’t keep their season going here on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Columbia River in the 2A District 4 volleyball tournament.

Columbia River took the match with set scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-22.

“We were learning and making small adjustments, but we made a bunch of errors and that was the difference,” W.F. West coach Emily Damschen said. “We gave up too many points on unforced errors. It was emotional at the end, not because we lost, but because the season is over, no one was in a rush to leave the locker room.”

Makenzie Moore recorded seven kills, Ashlee Vadala had four kills, Shasta Lofgren tallied three kills and Kailey Hoyt added two kills. Maggie Vadala totaled three aces and Jordan Crawford accounted for 21 digs.

It was the final game for seniors Crawford, Ashlee Vadala and Lexie Strasser. Damschen said the three were key players of the Bearcats this season and helped build a foundation for the first year head coach and coaching staff.

“I don’t know if it could have gone better, the girls were hard workers and they were always ‘OK coach,’” Damschen said. “That attitude and work ethic, every head coach comes in with different ideas and they were really open and accepting to some of my philosophies. I’m really am happy with the girls in the program, looking forward to some strong years."
