NAPAVINE — The W.F. West boys finished third overall and the Centralia girls finished seventh in a field of 33 boys and girls wrestling teams at the Napavine Tiger Classic wrestling tournament here on Saturday.
Kayden Ryan (106 pounds) and Austin Pierson (160) won the title for the Bearcats. Ryan won by pin and then a 15-6 decision to reach the finals, where Ryan defeated Asher Coppin of Olympia to claim the title.
Pierson faced off against fellow Bearcat Brock Guyette in the finals and won by a 3-0 decision. Pierson won his first match over Centralia’s Zach Rager by pin before earning a 5-3 decision and then a pin of teammate Hans Meier in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
Guyette was able to win each of his matches by pin to reach the title match before falling to Pierson to claim second place.
Kaden Wilson (120), Connor Trodahol (138) and Garrett Vonmoos (220) each finished in second place.
Wilson had a first round bye before winning by pin and winning a 7-6 decision over Rayzjon Davis to reach the finals. Camas’ Carson Derthick won a 9-0 decision over Wilson.
Trodahol won his first three matches by pin, including a win over Woodland’s Russell Shell in the semifinals. Cole Schluter won by a 15-3 decision over Trodahol in the finals.
Vonmoos defeated Julian Evans by pin in his semifinal match after a pin in his first match to reach the finals. Austyn Diraimo defeated Vonmoos in the championship by pin to claim the title.
Myles Johnston (132), Bryce Laufenberg (145), Beau Booth (152) and Mcguire Bull (182) each earned third place.
Taryn Salazar (100) continued to wrestle well to claim a title for the Centralia girls. Salazar earned a pin in her opening match, a 18-2 technical fall in her second match and pinned Edmonds-Woodway Lydia Biggs in 33 seconds to earn the title.
Analeese McAllister (125) finished second for the Tigers. McAllister won all of her matches by pin, including a pin in the semifinals against W.F. West’s Natasha Dugger. Franklin Pierce’s Reily Dogeagle won by pin in the finals to claim the title.
Kalyssa Conway (105) and Marley Farfan (170) each finished in third place for Centralia.
There were two other local winners in Onalaska-Napavine’s Grant Bennett (195) and Toledo-Winlock’s Hunter Weeks (152).
Bennett won all of his matches by pin, including a 31 second pin over Woodland’s Joshua Decker in Bennett’s third match of the day.
Weeks had a first round bye before winning by pin in all three of his matches to claim the title, including a win over Deric Goodwin of Camas in the finals.
Onalaska’s Kolby Mozingo (132) finished second. After winning his first two matches by pin, Mozingo won by a 10-2 decision over Castle Rock’s Colby Cook. Andrew Webber of Camas pinned Mozingo in the finals.
Napavine’s Sydney Burdick finished third at 135 pounds. After earning a win in her first match, Burdick was pinned in her second match, but was able to win the next two matches by pin, including a win over Curtis’ Liz Grubb to finish in third.
The W.F. West girls had two placers in Madison Wilson (120) and Gracie Combs (155). Wilson lost to Aberdeen’s Alexie Darst, but won all of her other matches by pin to claim second place.
Combs (155) lost her first match but bounced back with a win over Ocosta’s Samantha Starkey. Combs also lost her third match, but came back to top Aberdeen’s Maray Zepeda by pin in 27 seconds.
Bearcats Claim Third at Ray Westerberg Invite
ELLENSBURG — From a crowded 16-team field field W.F. west was able to emerge with the third highest point total at the Ray Westberg Invite wrestling tournament here on Saturday.
Isaac Reavis was the Bearcats’ highest placer with a runner-up finish at 195 pounds while seven of his teammates placed fourth in their respective divisions.
Reavis blanked Lucas Martin of Southridge in his opening match and then pinned Max Prazer of Eastmont in 3:55 during the semifinals. Reavis fell to Isaiah Lopez of Sunnyside in the finals.
Caden Cunningham (113), Brady Davis (120), Zach Evans (132), Mason Morones (138), Carver Brennan (152), Bryson Boyd (220), and Chase Conway (285) all placed fourth for W.F. West to help bring home the bronze for team points. W.F. West scored 148 points as a team and edged Selah by one point for a spot on the team podium. Ellensburg (162.5) and Sunnyside (249.5) were the only teams to finish ahead of the Bearcats.
W.F. West will host Black Hills and Tumwater for a 2A Evergreen Conference double dual on Wednesday.
Tigers Settle for Fourth at Dave Holter Invite
KELSO — The thinnest of margins separated Centralia from a third place team finish here Saturday at the eight-team Dave Holter Invite wrestling tournament.
Kelso won their own shindig with 253.5 total team points while Tumwater placed second with 133 points. It was Rainier that edged Centralia for third place by one point with a total of 118.5.
This late in the season the near-miss didn’t sit so well with Centralia coach Scott Phillips, who noted that his team traveled with a shorthanded squad.
“Our wrestlers are not all doing their part yet, but our guys who showed up competed well,” said Phillips.
Alex Hicks-Avron captured an individual title for the Tigers at 120 pounds and Caleb Hylton took first at 170 pounds.
“Alex Hicks-Avron had a great tournament while beating last years fifth place finisher in the state tournament. Alex made it down to 120 for this tournament and did great,” said Phillips. “Caleb Hylton won the tournament by all pins and was very dominant.”
Hicks-Avron defeated Parker Owen of Woodland 10-3 in his first match and then topped Josiah Sanders of Woodland 5-2 for the title. Hylton pinned Cash Nichalsan of Lake Washington in 54 seconds to start his day and then dropped Tanner Chapman of Rainier in 54 seconds to take the title.
Juan Gaspar made a run at another individual title for Centralia at 113 pounds but fell short to Woodland’s Judeah Sanders in the title tilt.
“Juan Gaspar wrestled great up until he made a mistake in the third period and gave up a quick pin. He wrestled last year’s sixth place finisher in the state,” noted Phillips.
Centralia also garnered points from Justin Lake’s third place finish at 145 pounds and a trio of fourth place finishes from Trevor Richey (160 lbs), Sawyer Vogel (182), and AIden Goodrich (220). Porter Harris rounded things out with a sixth place finish at 126 pounds for the Tigers.
Centralia will wrestle Tumwater and Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference double-dual at W.F. West on Wednesday.
