CHENEY — It was another day full of successes for area athletes here at Eastern Washington University on Saturday. The Adna Pirates boys squad did their best to steal the show with a first place finish in overall points but there were numerous other area schools represented at the podium on the final day of the prep sports season. The Morton-White Pass boys 4x100 relay team and Onalaska shot put chucker Carmen Cleveland-Barrera were first among the rest of the pack with top marks in their events.
The Adna boys topped finished in first place overall with 54 points, outpacing the runner-ups from Northwest Christian by 19 points. Austen Apperson did all he could to help the Pirates claim the team title with first place finishes in the 800 meter and 3200 meter races. He also helped the Adna 4x400 relay team to top honors and finished second in the 1600 meter contest.
Apperson (1:54.37) defeated Garrett McSheffrey of Northwest Christian by nearly two seconds in the 800 meter race, setting a new state record in the process. In the 3200 meter race Apperson posted a first place time of 9:57.79. Nicholas Marty of Toledo finished in fourth place in that race with a time of 10:04.98.
In the 4x400 relay Apperson was joined by Jarod Keys, Brady Collins and Zaner Blankenship as they posted a winning time of 3.25.69.
Adna’s winning margin could have been even larger if their 4x100 relay team of Braden Thomas, Blankenship, Keys, and Collins hadn’t wound up disqualified. Despite the Pirates woes in that event a local team still wound up setting the mark as Morton-White Pass’ Manuel Martinez, Kaleb Rashoff, Jesse Urban and Tristen Storey placed first thanks to a time of 43.84. Toledo placed second as Jacob Butcher, Miguel Soto, Duke Schaplow, and Braden Bramhall combined to turn in a time of 44.34.
Four local sprinters finished in the top six in the 100 meter dash. Storey of Morton-White Pass finished in second with a time of 11.50 and Brady Collins finished in third at 11.54. Braden Bramhall (11.69) of Toledo placed fifth and Keys (11.72) from Adna finished in sixth.
Storey came in second in the 200 meter dash as well with a time of 22.58. Collins was once again on his heels in third place with a time of 22.83.
Keith Olson of Napavine placed second in the shot put with a heave of 49-03.25 while Jacob Butcher of Toledo placed seventh with a mark fo 44-00.5.
Draven Riddle of Napavine finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 42-10.5 and Dana Isham of Pe Ell came in fifth with a mark of 40-05.75. In the discus finals Jeremiah Yost of Pe Ell wound up second with a fling of 138-09. Napavin’s Olson wound up in fourth place with a toss of 132-10.
In the 110 meter hurdles Braeden McAllister of Pe Ell finished fourth with a time of 16.79 and Anthony Peak of Toledo wound up fifth with a time of 17.18. Bryce Cline of Winlock finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of six feet while Elias Howe of Adna came in eighth with a jump of 5-08.
Napavine’s Riddle found his way back to the podium with a third place finish in the long jump thanks to a mark of 21-08. He was joined by Isham from Pe Ell who jumped 20-00.75 for a fifth place finish and Rashoff from Morton-White Pass finished seventh with a leap of 19-09.5.
Pe Ell’s McAllister finished eighth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.31. James Cushman of Mossyrock finished eighth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.18. Gavyn Higdon of Morton-White Pass rounded things out with an eighth place finish in the javelin thanks to a toss measuring 157-09.
The Morton-White Pass boys finished seventh as a team with a score of 29 points while Napavine (27) finished one point behind Asotin for eight place.
In girls action Kal Schaplow of Toledo set the pace early on with a first place finish in the javelin thanks to a throw of 124-02. Cleveland-Barrera of Onalaska found her way to the top of the podium in the shot put the next day with a toss of 41-04.5. Heather Edgar of Mossyrock joined Cleveland-Barrera at the podium with a heave of 35-03.25 that was good for sixth place.
The Adna girls 4x100 relay team of Faith Wellander, Kaylin Todd, Zarine Walker, and Carli Latimer placed fifth with a time of 52.18. The Pirates subbed in Maddie Kleemeyer for Latimer in the 4x400 race and placed fifth again with a time of 4:17.29. Latimer wasn’t finished though as she finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.90.
In the 300 meter hurdles Chloe Stewart of Napavine placed sixth with a time of 48.65. Stewart missed out on placing in the long jump by just 3.5 inches with a jump of 15-08. Fellow Tiger Trinity Underhill placed eighth in the pole vault with a mark of eight feet.

W.F. West Has Solid Showing at State Meet
TACOMA — W.F. West had a handful of athletes place at the State 2A track & field championships at Mount Tahoma High School here on Saturday.
Megan Flexhaug was the highest finisher for the Bearcats, placing third in the pole vault with a height cleared of 10 feet, 6 inches. Brianna Powe placed 16th in the discus (88-08).
"This was a great way for Megan to conclude her senior season as a Bearcat,” W.F. West coach Autumn Ledgerwood said. “This is her highest placing at State and she has really had a stellar high school career."
In boys action, Colby White finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. He finished eighth in the triple jump (42-06) and ninth in the long jump (20-03.75). Jaiyden Camoza placed fifth in the long jump (21-01).
"Colby leaves W.F. West as one of our best all time jumpers and to medal in back to back years at State in two events is something to be proud of," Ledgerwood said. “This is Jaiyden’s first season, so to medal in two events your first year is a great accomplishment.”
The 4x100 relay team of Troy Yarter, Carver Brennan, Camoza and Gerardo Sanchez-Carpio earned fourth place with a time of 43.74 seconds.
“This group really stepped up, running a season best in the prelims that put them as our number two fastest 4x100 of all-time,” Ledgerwood said.
Sequim won the boys team title with 61 points. Tumwater took second and Ridgefield finished third. Bellingham won the girls team title with 42 points. Port Angeles and North Kitsap tied for second.
