COLFAX — No. 10 Toledo rattled off 26 second-half points to pull away from No. 7 Colfax and earn a 36-12 upset win in a State 2B football tournament quarterfinal game here Saturday afternoon.

Duke Schaplow ran for 155 yards on 23 carries and Davin Kinsman racked up 105 yards on 22 carries to lead the Indians.

Schaplow was 2 of 4 passing for 38 yards and a touchdown. Miguel Soto caught one pass for 28 yards and a score and Carlo Arceo-Hansen caught the other for 10 yards.

Toledo got its work done on the ground, racking up 331 rushing yards. Coach Mike Christensen gave props to the entire offensive line, including Joshua Quinn, Larry Demery, Michael Echtle, Austin Allen and Joshhill Tilton.

“They don't get enough credit for what they do up front,” Christensen said. “Along with coach JB Ewers, that unit led us off today.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Toledo got on the board first when Schaplow connected with Soto for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Colfax tied the game with Layn Gingerich finding Matt Hockett for an 18-yard touchdown pass and a 6-6 tie at intermission.

It was the Schaplow show in the third quarter as the senior quarterback ran in a score from 1 yard out and punched in the two-point conversion, then had a 77-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 20-6 after three quarters.

Toledo put the finishing touches on the win with a Kinsman 3-yard touchdown run. Soto then put the icing on the cake with a 47-yard interception return for a score. Gingerich threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Blake Holman for the final points of the game.

“I think they played excellent. The first half, we had penalties, fumbles. We shot ourselves in the foot but we persevered,” Christensen said. “It is a long drive, a good seven hours. I’m proud of the way that we responded to that adversity and they really stepped up and played well.”

The Indians (7-4) will play No. 2 Napavine in the State 2B quarterfinals next weekend. Napavine defeated Toledo 41-7 in Week 3 in Napavine.
