WESTPORT — The W.F. West girls had eight medalists to earn a team victory at the Ocosta Invite here on Saturday.
Elizabeth Patana at 115 pounds and Xylia Warner at 135 pounds each won by pin in the title matches to claim the crown. Courtney Jones (125 pounds) and Tasha Dugger (130 pounds) each pinned all three of their opponents to secure the title.
Maryah Wisener at 145 pounds and Gracie Combs at 190 pounds each reached the championship match, but fell to place second. Paetynn Lopez (170) lost in her opening match but had three straight pins to earn third place. Kallee Corey (140) also began the tournament with a loss but won her next two matches before falling in the third place match to earn fourth.
The Bearcats are back on the mats on Saturday, Dec. 21, traveling to Hoquiam to compete in the Grizzly Stocking Stuffer tournament.
Rochester Takes Fourth at Kick Off Classic
ABERDEEN — The Warriors had four winners to open the wrestling season at the Kick Off Classic here on Saturday.
At 138 pounds, Dailin Schlecht won the tournament, his first career tournament victory. He defeated Nikolai Jensen from Klahowya by technical fall, 20-3, in the championship match.
Riley Cohron won the tournament at 152-pounds. He pinned Malakai Emmons of Hoquiam in the championship match.
Jayden Lancaster won by decision against Trenton Good of Shorecrest 10-4 to claim the 160-pound title.
The biggest win of the tournament for the Warriors was Elijah Spitzer. He pinned Brendan Miller of North Mason in three minutes to capture the title. He defeated the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the tournament in the finals after beating the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the tournament.
“He’s never placed in a tournament for us. He put in time in the offseason and he goes out there and dominates as a nobody,” Rochester coach Jason Dick said. “Big E is such a big leader and a good young man and that’s why I coach. I want to see that kid have success.”
Rochester is back in action at Blaine on Friday and Saturday for the Battle of the Border tournament.
Napavine’s Cave Voted Outstanding Girl Wrestler at Ocosta Invitational
WESTPORT — Napavine’s Pearl Cave won the 155-pound division and was voted the most outstanding girl wrestler at the Ocosta Invitational here on Saturday.
Cave pinned Hoquiam’s Kylie Bell in 56 seconds and won the title with a pin of Darrington’s Laura Langer in 1:09.
Napavine’s Kayla Bornstien also won the tournament at 140 pounds. She started the tournament with a pin of W.F. West’s Kallee Corey in 17 seconds. She took down Hoquiam’s Maddie Carpenter in a 5-4 win before pinning Darrington’s Jamie Larson in 1:03 to win the championship.
On the boys side, Napavine’s Joey Krause finished second at 145 pounds. He defeated Life Christian’s Holden Kelly by pin in 54 seconds before earning a pin in 1:35 against Rainier’s Joe Gerrish. Krause fell to Tenino’s Kysen Knox in the finals by pin in 1:46.
Winlock’s Dusty Thayer finished third at 132 pounds. He earned a win against Rainier’s Collin Davis in the opener with a pin in 30 seconds before falling to Knappa’s Robert Pina by pin. Thayer bounced back with a win by pin in 44 seconds against Ocosta’s Deigo Perdaris and won by pin in 1:19 in the third place match against Tenino’s Austin Hohner.
Hayden Allbritton finished fourth for the Cardinals at 126 pounds. He lost his first match of the day to Hoquiam’s Logan Avery by pin in 2:36. Allbritton was able to rebound and earned wins in his next three matches by pin against Chief Leschi’s Ikaika Baker, Tenino’s Joey Compher and Life Christian’s Luke Li. He pinned Raymond’s Max Crow in 2:15 in the consolation semifinals, but lost to Hoquiam’s Logan Avery in the third place match.
Winlock’s Kyle Patton finished fourth at 285 pounds. Patton pinned Raymond’s Raython Kentworthy in 1:29 and then won by pin in 33 seconds against Chief Leschi’s Cyrus Schaffer. He fell to Tenino’s Riley Rice in the semifinals by pin before losing again by pin to Toledo’s Michael Echtle in the third place match.
Napavine and Winlock are back on the mats on Thursday at a mix and match at Napavine at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Hylton Wins Title at White River Classic
WHITE RIVER — Centralia’s Caleb Hylton won the title in the 182 pound tournament at the White River Classic wrestling tournament here on Saturday.
Juan Gaspar at 120 pounds and Justin Lake at 152 pounds placed fifth.
“He (Hylton) wrestled solid all day, and eliminated mistakes. He had a solid day of wrestling,” Centrlaia coach Scott Phillips said. “The rest of our wrestlers competed well, but came up short. This was a very difficult tournament to start with. We are going to keep working to improve.”
Centralia is back in action on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Atown Throwdown in Arlington.
