Saturday's Girls Soccer: Toledo Takes Out Orcas Island

Posted

EASTSOUND — Toledo utilized a hat trick by Maryssa Peters in order to leave Orcas Island in their wake here on Saturday in a non-league girls soccer affair.

Peters scored her first goal in the fourth minute on an assist from Briza Gallegos. Thirty minutes later it was Gallegos doing the scoring with an assist by Rose Dillon. Peters notched her second goal in the 38th minute on an assist by Marina Smith and finished off her trifecta of scores with a goal in the 48th minute that was assisted by Dillon.

Toledo coach Noel Vasquez was happy with the way his team played after a long road trip that included a ferry ride but he was still hoping to see some more refined play from his veterans.

“It was a little rough start at the beginning. We got that goal in the fourth minute but we were playing a little sloppy,” noted Vasquez.

The Vikings scored their lone goal of the day in the 58th minute. Toledo’s starting goalkeeper, Kaylee Veigel, stopped all seven shots sent her way in the game while backup keeper, Daphni Bybee, turned in six saves in the second half.

Toledo put up 17 shots on the day with 12 of those on target. One of the last shots they got up came off the boot of Alejandra Cadarso and found the back of the net in the 78th minute. That score was assisted by Smith.

“We have a pretty good schedule coming up where I feel comfortable that our whole offense is going to turn on their engines,” said Vasquez.

Toledo (1-1) will host Toutle Lake on Wednesday.

Late Goal Lifts Bearcats Past Bulldogs

W.F. West’s Cameron Sheets scored in the 79th minute for the game winning goal in a 2-1 win for the Bearcats in a non-league girls soccer game on Saturday in Chehalis.

Brooke Streeter scored for Montesano in the 31st minute for a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Bearcats tied the game in the 49th minute. Elizabeth Patana heaved a throw-in to Madi Mencke, who used her head to find the back of the net to tie the game. In the 79th minute, Sheets gathered a loose ball, cut to the inside with her left foot and shot it past the keeper for the goal.

W.F. West outshot Montestano 7-2. Bearcat coach Allen Anderson commended Becca Deskins on defense, moving from her regular position in the midfield. Anderson also highlighted the play of Kyla McCallum.

The Bearcats (3-0) travel to Tenino on Tuesday for a non-league game.

Friday's Results

Napavine Leaves Evergreen Lutheran in the Dust

POULSBO — Three players scored two goals each here on Friday as Napavine ran away from Evergreen Lutheran 6-1 in a non-league girls soccer showdown.

Natalya Marcia got the Tigers’ offense roaring right out of the gate with goals in the 11th and 14th minutes of play. Makensee Taliaferro Bouge added goals in the 17th and 22nd minutes and Chloe Stewart finished the Napavine scoring spree with goals in the 33rd and 48th minutes.

“It was a rough game for Evergreen Lutheran. They were actually down a man and only played with ten,” noted Napavine coach Emily McCarthy. “They still played very well and I was very impressed with their keeper.”

Evergreen Lutheran scored their lone goal in the 49th minute but failed to get many more shots within arms length of the keeper box.

“Obviously it’s easier when the other team is down one but we were really able to put in some things that we’ve been working on in practice,” said McCarthy. “We kind of fell apart in the second half. We’re still working on our consistency. Right now consistency is not one of our strong points.”

McCarthy added that senior midfielder Halee Williams is expected to make her return to the pitch this week after suffering a knee injury during a jamboree in Centralia.

The Tigers were supposed to play Life Christian on Saturday but that game has been pushed back to Sep. 23. Napavine (1-1) will host Onalaska on Wednesday.
