FORKS — A four-hour drive and a slow start weren’t enough to topple Toledo here on Saturday as they managed to snag a 68-63 victory over the 1A Spartans in a non-league girls basketball affair.
Forks grabbed a 24-14 lead after the first quarter but Toledo was able to erase all of that deficit over the next two periods as they went on a 41-24 run.
“We got them for 17 turnovers. We kind of switched our press and got some turnovers but they shot really well,” said Toledo coach Brian Layton. “We didn’t get out well enough on their shooters in the first quarter and had to make some adjustments.”
Kal Schaplow scored a game-high 26 points in the win while Gracie Madill added a dozen points and five assists.
“She shot well. She had three 3’s. She’s got a good shot when she’s ready to shoot,” said Layton of Madill.
Toledo knocked down 15 of 22 free throws to help keep Forks at bay down the stretch.
Stacie Spahr added 11 points and a team-high 7 rebounds while Alejandra Cadarso scored 8 points and pulled down six boards.
Toledo (14-2, 5-1 league) will host Morton-White Pass on Tuesday.
ILWACO — The Trojans couldn’t slow Ilwaco and its star junior Erika Glenn in a 63-19 hammering on the road Saturday in Pacific 2B League action.
Glenn scored a game-high 16 points, passing the career 1,000 point mark, as the league-leading Fisherman (15-1, 14-0) shot a blazing 44 percent from the field and won their eight in a row.
“She handles the ball well and she creates her own shot off the dribble,” Pe Ell coach Randy Driver said. “She’s pretty tough to stop.”
Pe Ell (7-8, 7-6) had no answer offensively, scoring single digits in every quarter, including just two points each in the third and fourth quarters. The Trojans were led by Charlie Carpers four points, while three teammates each added two.
“We started off bad and got worse,” Driver said. “They played a trapping full court press in the first quarter and then they played a trapping half court and we just didn’t handle it well. We turned the ball over 39 times.”
The Trojans have no lost two in a row and will look to turn things around when they travel to Cheif Leschi Monday.
MORTON — Angie Gil sank a clutch free throw in the closing moments here on Saturday in order to give Winlock a 33-32 victory over the Timberwolves in Central 2B League girls basketball action.
“It was tied with about a minute and change to go,” said Morton-White Pass coach Curt Atkinson. “Then the Winlock girl hit the front-end of the one-and-one and we called timeout to draw up a play but we wound up getting in our own way at the end.”
Shaylee Peters led the T-Wolves in both points and rebounds.
“She had a double double with 17 points, 15 rebounds and two steals,” said Atkinson. “She’s played really well for us this year. She’s worked her but off and she’s a leader and all of these girls look up to her. She’s been great with our younger kids.”
That leadership, for all it’s worth, didn’t help to put the ball in the bucket for the home team. MWP claimed a 8-5 lead after one quarter but then had to watch as it all disappeared.
“We shot a whopping 21 percent, 13 of 61 and 0 of 10 from three,” noted Atkinson. “We went out to Toutle and shot the ball really well and then we couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn tonight.”
Karlie Jones paced the Cardinals with 10 points while Azhla Camps and Gil each added 5 points. Coming off an ankle injury Addison Hall was held to just 8 points.
“We did a great job of limiting Hall on offense,” said Atkinson. “We basically ran a triangle and two and forced everyone else around us to beat us, and they did. Credit to Winlock. Tori had a great game plan for them and they executed it.”
Winlock coach Tori Nelson came away impressed with the injured effort of Hall that helped the Cardinals snag their first league win.
“Addison had 14 boards and was double teamed all night,” said Nelson. “She played injured. Ankle is still pretty huge. She’s tough.”
Atkinson noted that the loss is likely a death knell for the T-Wolves playoff hopes this year.
“I feel bad for our girls because we are working hard and we’re not having a lot of success this year,” said Atkinson. “It doesn't get any easier because almost everyone else we play is ranked in the top ten in the state. We really needed this one.”
Winlock (6-10, 1-5 league) will host Kalama on Tuesday.
Morton-White Pass (2-14, 1-5 league) will play at Toledo on Tuesday.
TENINO — Elma let the Beavers hang around in their own gym for a little while here on Friday night before they tightened the grip of their talons and flew off with a 62-46 victory in a 1A Evergreen League girls basketball contest.
Jalyn Sackrider led the Eagles with a game-high 27 points. Kali Rambo added 14 points in the win while Quin Mikel dropped in 10 points. Elma also used their height to dominate on the glass.
“I don’t know what that stat was but it wasn’t pretty,” said Tenino coach Scott Ashmore
Ater one quarter Elma held a 19-11 lead and Tenino was never able to close the gap.
“We were still within distance after the first but every shot they put up, and they took a lot of shots, when they missed them they got offensive rebounds,” said Ashmore. “They worked their game plan well. Sackrider is tough. She’s plenty to deal with just by herself.”
Ashley Schow paced Tenino with 19 points.
“She’s solid. We’re not posting her up and that’s all she did last year so that’s what teams are expecting. She’s handling the ball and she’s shooting it from outside and she’s got a nice jump shot,” said Ashmore.
Alivia Hunter added 9 points for Tenino while Abby Severse and Megan Letts each scored 8 points.
“My girls played hard it’s just tough competition with the experience Elma has right now,” said Ashmore.
Tenino (5-9, 1-3 league) will play at Montesano on Tuesday.
