RANDLE — It was a close game in the first half, but the Timberwolves scored 19 points in the third quarter to pull away for a 55-44 win over Onalaska in a non-league boys basketball game here on Saturday.
Kaleb Rashoff led all scorers with 16 points. Dylan Richards had a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds and Hayden Young came close with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Onalaska’s Carter Whitehead and Ashton Haight each scored 12 points.
MWP won the rebounding battle 47-24 and held the Loggers to just two 3-pointers made in the game.
Onalaska led by one after the first quarter, but MWP won the second quarter by a point to even the game at 23. The 19 points by the T-Wolves in the third quarter gave them a 42-33 lead, allowing MWP to cruise in the fourth quarter.
“It went really well. The first half, we made a few mistakes defensively. We just had to make a couple adjustments at halftime,” MWP coach Chad Cramer said. “The kids came out and did a great job of making those adjustments. It was nice after being tied at halftime and in the fourth, we had a little foul trouble but did a good job of maintaining it out there with some starters on the bench. I thought our bench came through and did a wonderful job. Everybody that played I thought did a really good job and contributed very well.”
Cramer praised the play of Richards, noting he was an “absolute man in the paint” against Onalaska. He was pleased with Gavyn Higdon’s eight rebounds and the job Rashoff did at point guard.
MWP (3-1) travels to Rainier on Tuesday while Onalaska (3-2) hosts Rainier on Thursday.
Toledo Topples Adna
ADNA — Toledo used a big second quarter to pull away from Adna and earn a 54-45 win in a non-league boys basketball game here on Saturday.
Fano Arceo-Hansen led all scorers with 16 points and Andreas Malunat added 10 for the Indians.
Trevor Minkoff led Adna with 12 points and Austen Apperson chipped in with 11 for the Pirates
The Indians outscored Adna 18-6 in the second quarter to gain a 30-17 lead at halftime.
“Toledo is a good basketball team. They were extremely tough and executed a heck of a lot better than we did tonight,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “That’s the team to beat if you ask me. They’re really good already this early in the season.”
The Pirates outscored Toledo 28-24 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.
Toledo (4-0) travels to Toutle Lake on Tuesday.
Toutle Lake Spoils Tigers’ Debut
NAPAVINE — Four Ducks scored in double figures here Saturday as Toutle Lake topped Napavine, 59-31, in the Tigers’ season opener.
Dawson Stanley led Napavine with 12 points.
Ryder Moss scored 17 to pace Toutle Lake, while Mike Adams and Broc Keeton each scored 13. Austin Sweet added 10 for the Ducks.
Napavine went just 3 of 18 from the foul line and 13 of 36 from the field (36 percent).
“Those things are going to get better,” Napavine coach Rex Stanley said. “We’re working in a lot of new guys and it showed Saturday. We’re hoping to get better as the year goes, but it’s going to take a little time.”
Napavine (0-1) plays at Winlock on Tuesday in another non-league game.
Dowies Drops 40 as Beavers Blast Mossyrock
MOSSYROCK — Yngwie Dowies scored 40 points here Saturday as Tenino crushed Mossyrock, 98-40, in non-league boys basketball action.
The Beavers led 47-30 at halftime and poured in 36 points in the third quarter.
“Their size and strength really killed us,” Mossyrock coach Jordan Hunter said. “We couldn’t get the ball into the lane and couldn’t penetrate.”
Dowies, he added, presented a big challenge.
“He absolutely destroyed us,” Hunter said. “When you’re 6-foot-2, 215 (pounds), and full of muscle, and we’re 5-10, 135, we can’t physically keep you from the basket.”
Logan Brewer added 22 points for Tenino, and Alex Bratton chipped in 11.
Ryan Bellino led Mossyrock with 11 points.
Mossyrock (0-3) plays at Wahkiakum on Tuesday. Tenino (4-1) plays at Chimacum on Tuesday.
Ajoge’s 37 Not Enough For Tigers Against Trojans
BREMERTON — Centralia’s Michael Ajoge scored 37 points, but it was Olympic who came away with an 80-62 win in a non-league boys basketball game here on Saturday.
Malakai Emmons was the other Tiger in double figures with 13 points and five assists. Derek Beairsto chipped in six points and six rebounds.
Olympic dominated the glass, outrebounding Centralia 33-16.
The Trojans led 17-12 after one quarter and 40-33 at halftime. Olympic scored 23 points in the third quarter to gain a big lead.
Centralia slowly clawed back into the game and trailed by just 10 points with four minutes to go, but a missed lay-in and a couple turnovers doomed the Tigers comeback.
“We played much better. It was kind of one of those games where we looked at the small victories. We’ve been working with a lot of things in practice and are starting to translate into games,” Centralia coach Kyle Donahue said. “We definitely made some improvements throughout the game. Michael shot the ball really well and finished really well. We fed off his energy and they kept feeding him. He had a really good game.”
Donahue noted the Tigers only had 15 turnovers, a significant improvement from their previous games. He also noted the performance of Cameron Erickson coming off the bench and playing a solid fourth quarter.
Centralia (0-5) travels to Ridgefield on Wednesday for a non-league game.
Acorns Earn First Win Over Lake Crescent
OAKVILLE — Jacob Ristvet scored 23 points to lead Oakville to a 48-40 win over Lake Crescent in a non-league boys basketball game here on Saturday.
Nathan Boyd scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Tyson Murray added two points and six rebounds.
After Lake Crescent led 10-9 after one quarter, the Acorns came alive and gained a 20-19 lead at halftime.
It was all Acorns in the third quarter, outscoring Lake Crescent 17-6 in the third quarter to allow Oakville to cruise to victory in the fourth quarter.
Oakville (1-2) travels to face Mary M. Knight on Friday in a 1B Coastal League game.
