Saturday's 2B Softball: Tigers Exact Revenge on Titans En Route to First District Title

Posted

Abbi Music has been here before. In fact, this was her second year in a row in this exact situation, and she both capitalized on and relished the opportunity.

Music was all confidence in the pitching circle, as she led the Napavine Tigers to their first District 4 2B Softball Championship in school history by way of a 6-4 victory in a rematch over the Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans at Fort Borst Park in Centralia on Saturday.

Music has been in the circle for three district tournaments. Her freshman year, the Tigers fell victim to a defending state champion Toutle Lake team, before taking third place in the tournament. She missed her chance sophomore year due to injury, but she made it to the title game last season to face off with the Titans. It went poorly for Napavine, as a PWV on the warpath clobbered them in a no-hit, five inning loss.

This time, Music was ready, and she could hardly contain her smile as the innings continued to go in the favor of the Tigers.

“It feels so good,” Music said. “It was well earned and I guess the third time’s the charm.”

The triumph wasn’t guaranteed, however. After two quick outs, the Titans embarked on a last chance rally. Britney Patrick started it off with a single before advancing to second on a errant throw from left field. Kamryn Adkins followed with an RBI double and Annika Mason answered in kind to score another run. At this juncture, the smile had left Music’s face and been replaced with a look of both concentration and confidence.

“That’s enough to put any pitcher on edge,” Music said. “But I had confidence in my team and we got it done.”

After a walk and a couple of wild pitches to put runners in scoring position, Music regained composure and slammed the proverbial door to the comeback bid shut with a swinging strikeout.

Napavine (20-3) is the No. 1 seed out of District 4 with brackets set to be released tomorrow. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (19-4), the defending State 2B champions, are the No. 2 seed.

Adna Outlasts Ocosta For Third Place

The Pirates and Wildcats combined for 27 hits in the District 4 2B softball tournament game at Borst Park in Centralia on Saturday, with Adna prevailing 14-8 to capture third place in District 4.

Adna collected 15 hits, including Emma Eko going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and Haley Rainey going 3 for 5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run.

Tyas Pannette was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Darian Humphrey was 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and a run.

Skye Snow was 2 for 4 for the Pirates with a home run.

Jenikka Poppe pitched a complete game for Adna, allowing five earned runs with eight strikeouts in the win.

Adna came out of the gates hot with four runs in the first inning. The Pirates scored 10 runs in the third and fourth frames to pull away from the Wildcats.

Adna is the No. 3 seed out of District 4 and will compete at the State 2B softball tournament in Yakima on Friday and Saturday.

Onalaska Defeats Winlock For Trip to State

Onalaska left no doubt who would receive the final berth from District 4 into the state tournament as the Lady Loggers won 24-4 in five innings in a District 4 2B softball tournament game here on Saturday.

The Lady Loggers collected 22 hits in the win, including Alicia Vint going 4 for 5 with a double, three RBI and five runs. Amy Henderson was 4 for 5 with two RBI and a double and Ashley Pannkuk was 3 for 5 with three runs and an RBI.

Adalee Sabin added three hits, three runs and three RBIs for Onalaska.

Amy Henderson allowed no earned run with two strikeouts and a walk in the circle for the Lady Loggers.

Winlock’s Sabrena Barragan had a triple and Cheleena Squibb had a double. The Cardinals had 12 errors in the loss.

Winlock led 4-1 after the first inning, but Onalaska scored five runs in the second inning to take the lead and added 18 runs over the final three frames to secure their ticket to state.

Onalaska will be the No. 5 seed out of District 4 in the State 2B softball tournament on Friday and Saturday in Yakima.

Winlock ends the season 13-12 overall and brings back their entire roster next season.

Rainey’s No Hitter Leads Adna Past Winlock

Haley Rainey threw a no-hitter against Winlock to lead the Pirates to a 16-0 win in four innings in a District 4 2B softball tournament consolation semifinal game at Fort Borst Park in Centralia on Saturday.

Rainey had seven strikeouts and one walk. She was dominant at the plate as well, going 4 for 4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs. Ruby Bower, Kaylee Ashley and Abby Kruger each had two hits for the Pirates.
