2A/1A Baseball: Hawes Fans 16 in Warrior Win

ROCHESTER — Brock Hawes struck out 16 of 21 batters, leading Rochester to a 9-1 win over Elma in Evergreen 2A/1A League action here Thursday. Hawes, a senior, pitched a complete game for the Warriors.

Hawes also had success at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double.

“It was senior night, and he came out and threw the game of his life,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “Flat-out just commanded the strike zone tonight, did everything you could ask for.”

Added Quarnstrom: “I was pretty proud of him, not to mention his performance at the plate. He did it all tonight.”

Bradden Schneider had three RBIs on the day, hitting a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. Tyler Barnes was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

The Warriors scored five runs in the second inning, and didn’t concede a run until the sixth.

Rochester finishes the season 6-14, with a 5-7 record in Evergreen play to finish sixth.

Quarnstrom thanked senior Chase Lenzi, Colton Neal, Andrew Filmore, Brock Hawes, Brandon Rogers and Tyler Barnes for their work in the Warrior baseball program.



Errors Cost Tenino in Loss to Hoquiam

HOQUIAM — Defensive lapses proved to be the difference maker as Hoquiam defeated Tenino 9-1 in the final day Evergreen 2A/1A League play here Thursday.

Both teams had eight hits, but the Beavers committed five errors against a Hoquiam squad that played clean defense.

Payton Quintanilla was 2 for 4 with four RBIs for Hoquiam, and Jerod Steen drove in two runs. The Grizzlies scored four runs on in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.

“Our defense was not playing very well today, to say the least,” Tenino coach Conner Hoque said. “If we fixed some of those mistakes could’ve different game. We just got outplayed today. … We couldn’t string our hits together.”

Kaleb Strawn went 2 for 3 for the Beavers, and Ryan Deoskey was 2 for 2.

Tenino finishes the regular season 9-11, with a 6-8 record in the Evergreen. The Beavers advance to the district tournament as the number four seed, where they will play King’s Way on Monday at 4 p.m. in Castle Rock.
