Prep Wrestling: Four Tigers Take First at Washington Tourney

TACOMA — Centralia’s Tristan Dickey and Christian Smith both placed first for the Tiger wrestlers here Saturday at Washington High School’s Joe Caron Memorial Tournament.

With the flu bug hitting the team of late, Centralia was limited in the number of wrestlers it could send to the tournament, according to Tiger coach Scott Phillips.

Smith, at 160 pounds, injured his knee early in his final match, but still managed to fight through to win with a pin.

“After evaluating him he really could not put weight on his right knee. I gave him the choice of if he wanted to continue or not,” Phillips said. “Christian chose to continue. This made me very proud as a coach. Your try to teach mental toughness, and in this case it came out.”

Aaron Adamo finished third at 160, while Dickey’s win came in the 138 bracket.

In girls action, Centralia’s Veronica Chigo (110) and Jordan Christin (170) both finished first, while Tyler Jorgenson was second (140) and Samantha Teitzel (130) was third.

Centralia will wrestle in the sub-regional tournament on Saturday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

Dowells Each Win at Beach Brawl

ILWACO — Adna’s Dowell brothers each won their weight class here Saturday at the Beach Brawl wrestling tournament.

Braxton Dowell, a sophomore wrestling at 138 pounds, and Ashton Dowell, a freshman at 145, both came out on top.

“The Dowell brothers continue to impress us each week and are always back to back in their finals matches, which is pretty cool,” Adna coach Craig Ferrier said. “We hope to see that trend continue at districts.”



Freshman Matthew Slape (132) and senior Tanner Fields (160) took second, while freshman Christian Loose finished third (160). Luke Wellander (138) finished fifth. 

The Pirates finished third as a team in the event, which featured 16 teams from Southwest Washington and Northern Oregon.

Adna will return to Ilwaco on Saturday for the District 4 2B/1B Wrestling Tournament.

Note: Adna assistant coaches Matt Patana and Dave Layden were voted the District 4 Assistant Coaches of the Year, by the district’s coaches.

“This is a much deserved recognition for all of their hard work and dedication to this team and these young men,” Ferrier said. “We definitely would not be enjoying the success we have been this year without them.”

Three Napavine-Ony Wrestlers Win

BATTLE GROUND — A trio of grapplers from the Napavine-Onalaska wrestling squad won their bracket here Saturday at the Prairie Tournament.

Colton Brown won the 113-B bracket, pinning both of his opponents; Casey Oxford won the 126-C bracket with a 3-0 record; and first-year wrestler Rebekah Adams won the 130-pound girls division, also with a 3-0 record.

Ian Bowen (120), Adyan Costin (170) and Tempprince Gibbons (120) all finished second, with Cassandra Duren (140) taking third.

The Napavine-Onalaska wrestlers will be in Ilwaco on Saturday for the District 4 2B/1B Wrestling Tournament.
