Prep Wrestling: Centralia Beats Montesano in Dual; Tiger Girls Fall to Yelm

MONTESANO — The Tigers got four pins and three forfeits here Thursday to handily beat Montesano, 53-23, in a nonleague wrestling dual meet.

Juan Gaspar (113 pounds), Mykka McAllister (138), Caleb Hylton (160) and Aaron Adamo (195) al recorded pins for Centralia.

“We competed well, and our guys executed a little bit better tonight,” Tiger coach Scott Phillips said. “I like to see our guys run the technique that we teach in practice in matches. We seemed to do a little more of that.”

Dayvi Gaspar got a 17-8 major decision at 126, Tristan Dickey got a 13-3 major decision at 170, and Justin Lake won 5-1 over Jordan King at 145.

Centralia (3-1, 2-0 Evergreen 2A Conference) wrestles in Kelso’s Dave Holter Invitational on Saturday.

Tiger Girls Go Toe to Toe With Tornadoes



YELM — Centralia’s girls wrestling squad more than held its own against defending state champion Yelm here Thursday night, coming up just short at 32-30 in a dual meet.

“To compete with a team of this caliber is a direct result of the hard work our girls are putting in,” Centralia coach Mark Holmberg said. “I’m extremely proud of the effort they showed. The fact that the majority of these girls will be here for two more years makes me very excited about our future.”

Taryn Salazar got a pin at 100 pounds for the Tigers, and Olivea Delaney picked up a pin at 105. Faith Halseth, a junior who joined the team midseason, got a second-round pin at 125, and Mariah Taylor had what Holmberg called her best match of the season in a second-round pin at 130.

Kupria LaPierre added a pin at 135 for the Tigers, and Jakayla Shipe got an exhibition pin over Laurel Bradford at 190.

Centralia will wrestle in the Napavine Tournament on Saturday.
