Prep Wrestling: Bearcats Win King of the Hill Title

TUMWATER — W.F. West had three individual champions and ran away with the team title here Saturday at Black Hills High School’s King of the Hill wrestling tournament, edging second-place Graham-Kapowsin by over 60 points.

Damon Thomas won the 138 title, beating Auburn Mountainview’s Joey Santos — the top ranked 138-pounder in the 3A class — in overtime for the championship.

Michael Anderson was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, winning all four of his matches via pin, in taking the 152 crown, and Will Alexander took first at 126 for the Bearcats.

“Overall, I thought it was good. It was our last tournament of the year, so we’re just kind of trying to keep the rust off before the postseason,” Bearcat coach Jamie Rakevich said. “I thought our kids competed pretty well.”

Levi Walters (113), Michael Matagi (145), Brendan Spahr (182) and Hunter Arredondo (285) each finished second for the Bearcats. Braden Bostwick (195) took third, Logan Sigler (138) finished fourth and Drew Alexander (160) and Tyler Pallas (220) each finished fifth.

W.F. West will host rival Centralia on Thursday for an Evergreen 2A Conference dual meet and senior night festivities. The varsity match is set to start at 7 p.m., and will be preceded by a girls dual match.

McAllister, Smith, Finch Win for Centralia

LONGVIEW — Centralia had three individual champions here Saturday at the R.A. Long Invite wrestling tournament.

Mykka McAllister won the 120-pound bracket, Christian Smith won at 160 and Joe Finch was a champion at 182.

Andrew Anderson (126) and Tristan Dickey (152) each finished third for the Tigers.

“Our guys competed well, again showing a lot of growth,” Centralia coach Scott Phillips said. “I am happy about the way our guys finished, winning all of our finals matched.”

Centralia wrestles in an Evergreen 2A Conference dual meet at rival W.F. West on Thursday.

The Tiger girls wrestlers competed at the Jaguar Invite on Saturday at Emerald Ridge High School on Saturday, where Jordan Christin won the 170-pound championship. Tyler Jorgenson finished co-fifth (145), and Veronica Chigo was fourth (110).

Centralia’s boys and girls will wrestle at the Washington Invite on Saturday.

Four Pirates, Two Beavers Win at Willapa Harbor Invite

RAYMOND — The Pirates had four individual champions here Saturday to finish fourth, as a team, at the Willapa Harbor Invite wrestling tournament.

Matthew Slape, Ashton Dowell, Braxton Dowell and Tanner Fields all came out on top for Adna, while Riley Noonan and Jordan Antill were both winners for Tenino.



The Pirates scored 127 team points with just six wrestlers’ points counting towards that total.

Slape won the 132-pound bracket, beating Monroe's Brock Rice 15-0 in the title match.

Braxton Dowell was a winner at 138, with a 9-5 win over Monroe's Rory Felder in the finals.

Ashton Dowell won at 145, with a second-round pin of Monroe's Stephen Lettrell for the championship.

Fields won at 160, pinning all three of his opponents in a grand total of less than three minutes.

Also for Adna, Aaron Slape (126) took second, Corbin Balzer (132) took third, Levi Becker (145) finished third, and Skyler Smith (220) finished third.

Becker and Smith are both first-year wrestlers, Adna coach Craig Ferrier pointed out.

“It’s nice to see them work hard in practice and have it paying off by placing in a tournament,” Ferrier said. “As a whole, the entire team has been wrestling well as we begin to turn things up a notch for the postseason.”

Antill won the 120 bracket, beating Wahkiakum's Jacob Creed 24-8 in the finals, and Noonan won the heavyweight division for the Beavers, with a second-round pin of Wahkiakum's George Crow in the finals.

Tenino finished fifth as a team, with Cutter Copeland (106) taking fourth, Stuard Barta (182) taking third, Tyrick Weyrauch (195) finishing second and

Adna will wrestle its final 2B league match on Friday in Ilwaco. Tenino will host Eatonville in an Evergreen 2A/1A League dual on Wednesday.

Three Locals Reach Finals at Rubber Chicken Invite

KALAMA — A trio of local grapplers made the finals here Saturday at Kalama's 16-team Rubber Chicken Invite wrestling tournament.

Rochester's Jacob Paris took second at 120 pounds, while Toledo/Winlock's Dalton Yoder was second at 220. Toledo/Winlock's Seth Nichols was also a runner-up, at 285.

Rochester's Adrian Negrette (145) and Jacob Binion (285) were each co-fifth, and Toledo's Seth Lindsey (182) was co-fifth.

Rochester will host Elma in an Evergreen 2A/1A League dual on Wednesday. Toledo/Winlock will wrestle at Ilwaco's mix-and-match event on Friday.
