Macie Elliott was hot all game, and the rest of her Wahkiakum teammates followed suit in the second half.
Elliott, the star senior guard of the Mules’ third-place State 2B squad, scored 20 points on Wednesday night to lead the Black squad to a 77-72 victory in the Southwest Washington Senior All-Star Game at Centralia College’s Michael Smith Gymnasium.
Elliott and W.F. West’s Madi Haakenson paced the Black squad, which scored 43 points in the second half after a halftime tie. Haakenson added 16 points and nine rebounds with a pair of steals.
“We’ve always played against the W.F. West girls in the summer, so it was really cool to be on their team for once,” Elliott said. “They’re really nice. In games, you’re like, not best friends on the court, so playing with them was really fun.”
Elliott picked up the game’s MVP award, and beat South Bend’s Karly Reidenger in the halftime three-point shootout. The two were tied 15-15 in the finals, but Elliott cashed in 10 more triples in the 30-second overtime to claim the win.
And with Mule coach Rob Garrett on the sidelines, it was no surprise the Wahkiakum trio — Elliott, Charlie Ashe and Ellie Leitz — did most of the damage after the break.
Ashe hit a pair of threes to open the third quarter, breaking what had been a 34-34 halftime tie. Leitz added two buckets, part of a 15-4 run by the Black team to open the second half.
“We’ve been playing together since sixth grade, so we really know each other,” Elliott said.
The White team managed to take a 63-61 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Olympia’s Bekah Bradshaw scored to tie things up. Sarah Haakenson added a bucket, and Elliott’s three put the lead back at five.
Black Hills’ Maisy Williams, who scored a game-high 21 points for the White team, scored to cut it to three with two minutes left, but Ashe hit her third three of the game and Elliott scored off a steal by Madi Haakenson to ice the win.
Garrett coached in the Senior All-Star game two years ago, but with different results; his star guard at the time, Peyton Souvenir, won MVP honors for the winning team.
“It was fun to finally get a win,” he said.
And with his own players on his bench Wednesday, it was a different story.
“It’s an all-star game, so you kind of want to get everybody equal minutes,” Garrett pointed out with a laugh. “But in the fourth quarter, I was playing to win.”
Elliott finished 4 of 5 from behind the three-point arc and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tenino’s Kaylee Schow chipped in 11 points for the winners.
Williams hit 9 of 14 shots and added six rebounds. Reidenger added 12 points for the White team, with 12 rebounds, and R.A. Long’s Easton Reeves tallied 20 points.
Note: Several of the players in Wednesday’s game will lace up their sneakers again on Saturday as part of the WSGBCA All-State games at King’s High School in Seattle. Garrett will coach the 2B team, with Elliott, Lietz, Reidinger and Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese on his roster, in the 2 p.m. game against the 1B team. Haakenson and Williams will both play for Washougal coach Britney Knotts on the 2A team, which plays the 1A team at 4 p.m.
