Prep Girls Basketball: Lawrence Lifts Loggers Over T-Wolves

Posted

ONALASKA — Callie Lawrence tallied a game-high 22 points here on Saturday as the Loggers took out Morton-White Pass 68-23 in a Central 2B League girls basketball contest.

Eryn Duryea added 16 points in the win, including four first-half three-pointers, while Alex Cleveland-Barrera scored seven points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, Lawrence added six assists, five steals, and five rebounds to her team-high scoring output.

“She’s had quite a few 20-point games but that would be her best outing of the season,” said Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy. “She really went to the basket hard last night and drew a lot of fouls.”

On the flip side, the T-Wolves saw a few areas for improvement issues in the loss.

“We didn’t play particularly well tonight,” said Morton-White Pass coach Curt Atkinson before adding a caveat. “We got off to a good start. Frustrated them a few times and got them down to single-digits on the shot clock a few times.”

Shaylee Peters led the Timberwolves with 11 points in the contest while Chloe Short added four points and Natalia Armstrong chipped in three points.

“It’s just one of those days where you don’t play well. I thought we played better in the second half,” added Atkinson. “We have three juniors but other than that we are very young and we make a lot of mistakes that young players make.”

MWP (1-10) will host Kalama in Morton on Tuesday, while Onalaska (7-3) will play at Wahkiakum the same night.

McCallums Push Bearcats Past Buccaneers

KINGSTON — W.F. West had nine players score here on Saturday as they defeated the Buccaneers 51-25 in non-league girls basketball action.

Taya McCallum scored a game-high nine points for the Bearcats and Kyla McCallum added eight in the win.

“The person who really brought us back was Kyla McCallum. She had eight (points) off the bench, probably had for our five steals, and a load of rebounds,” noted W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski. “She really gave us the spark that we needed.”

Karnofski was also pleased with his team’s willingness to move the ball, noting that Maggie Vadala was the straw that stirred that particular drink.

“We probably had somewhere in double digits assists-wise,” said Karnofski.

Drea Brumfield added eight points for W.F. West while Madi Mencke and Tehani Henry both chipped in six points.

“Our defense played pretty well for the most part all night,” added Karnofski. “We forced a good number of turnovers but we couldn’t get our shot to fall. We were a little rusty.”

Karnofki noted that Henry helped clean up those missed shots with a haul of rebounds.

“She was a beast down low getting boards,” Karnofski said.

W.F. West (6-3) will play at Black Hills on Wednesday.

Beavers Put Bulldogs in in the Doghouse

STEVENSON — Tenino survived a choppy third quarter here on Saturday in order to capture a 47-35 victory over the Bulldogs in a non-league girls basketball contest.

The teams were tied at 10-all after one quarter before the Beavers went off for 16 points to take a 26-14 lead into the intermission. Although Tenino scored just four points in the third quarter, it also held Stevenson to just six points in order to maintain most of the advantage.

The Beavers’ defense got most of the credit for the win as it held the home team to just a 17 percent shooting percentage on 74 attempts.

“(Stevenson) did a good job rebounding so they had more than one second chance opportunity,” said Tenino coach Scott Ashmore. “We started out with a zone defense and they were just picking us apart in the beginning.”

Once Tenino switched over to a man-to-man defensive scheme they managed to keep the Bulldogs quiet for most of the second and third quarters.

“Our defense is what carried us today,” said Ashmore.

Abby Severse scored a game-high 17 points for Tenino while Ashley Schow added 13 points. Alivia Hunter had nine points and Megan Letts chipped in seven points in the win as the Beavers knocked down 17 of their 50 field goal attempts.

“We did a good job scoring in the second and fourth,” said Ashmore, who noted Schow was drawing double and triple team defense all night. “Severse hit shots and Letts was moving the ball.”

Tenino (3-6) will play at Forks on Tuesday.

Winlock’s Dam Defense Stops Three Rivers

WINLOCK — The Cardinals allowed no more than two points in any quarter here on Saturday as they dispatched Three Rivers Christian 43-7 in a non-league girls basketball contest.

“We took it to them early with the press. Addison (Hall) had eight steals out of it and Alexa Barragan had six,” said Winlock coach Tori Nelson. “That pressure hurt them a little bit.”

Hall led the way for Winlock with 18 points and 14 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. A host of other Cardinals also saw action against the Eagles.

“I played 14 girls today. They didn’t have a JV team so every single player in our program got in the game,” noted Nelson. “Every single person shot at least once and everyone got some action.”

Elizabeth Wolfe, Alexa Barragan, Rylei Krusmark, and Karlie Jones each chipped in four points for the Cardinals.

It was Jones’ first game back off of an injury and Nelson was pleased to have her junior wing player back in the mix before Central 2B League play resumes.

Winlock (4-6) will play at Toledo on Tuesday.

Napavine Comes Up Short in Tiger Showdown

NAPAVINE — Napavine was able to hang tough with 4A Battle Ground here on Saturday but wound up falling 42-37 in their non-league girls basketball tilt.

“I thought tonight was really good defensively,” said Napavine coach Shane Schutz. “Overall, tonight was our most complete game for our effort tonight.”

Napavine held Battle Ground to nine points in the first quarter and kept their foes at just a 25 percent shooting clip for the game. Still, Mallory Meyer was able to score a game-high 21 points in order to push Battle Ground over the top.

Meanwhile, Riley Beeson scored 11 points for Napavine while Natalya Marcial and Makensee Taliaferro added six points each.

“Riley Beeson lead us for the second night in a row,” noted Schutz. “We need to continue to improve or free throw shooting. We were 18 of 30 from the line.”

Napavine (4-6) will host Rainier on Tuesday.
