MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock won its first game since 2016 here Friday night, rushing for 353 yards in a 20-8 win over South Bend.

“We played good. We came out fired up, ready to play,” Mossyrock coach Chris Fried said. “They just executed well and played some smash nose football.”

On the ground, quarterback Evan Gootgeld led the way with 169 yards on 21 carries. Nick Fried collected 100 yards on 22 carries and TJ Villanueva added 48 yards on 11 carries. Deuce Kolb had four carries for 36 yards.

On the defensive side, South Bend had 202 total yards, including 131 passing yards.

“They performed really good. The line really got in there and stopped their run,” Fried said. “We have to do some work on our corners, we were playing them a little too soft. The quick slant was getting us, but all in all, the defense looked really good.”

Villanueva started the scoring for Mossyrock in the first quarter with a 20-yard touchdown run. Gootgeld galloped 46 yards for another score, but South Bend scored on a Drew Rose 36-yard pass to Nick Stamos to cut the lead to 14-8 at halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless, but Mossyrock sealed the win when Gootgeld punched in a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“I’m proud of the boys. It was our first win in the last two years,” Fried said. “They got a little taste of victory. We’ve got a lot of work to do and we’ll get back to it Monday.”

Mossyrock (1-0) hosts Onalaska in the Old Helmet game on Friday.

Indians Trounce Tarriers

TOLEDO — The Indians started off the 2018 football season with a 37-7 win over Charles Wright Academy here on Friday night.

Toledo was led by its three-headed rushing attack. Ethan Buck ran for 128 yards on 17 carries, Colbey Cherrington had 72 yards on eight carries with a score and Duke Schaplow added 60 yards on nine carries.

“They ran hard. The offensive line was opening up holes,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “They were sending the house, but were still able to find holes. That was encouraging.”

Bryce Marcil was 3 of 8 passing for 72 yards with a rushing score and a throwing score.

The Indian defense was stout, allowing 96 total yards including 58 yards on the ground. Christensen noted the play of Jemal Anderson in his first varsity game at defensive tackle.
