Prep Cross Country: Centralia’s Voetberg Wins as Tumwater Defeats Tigers

Centralia’s Vance Voetberg won the boys race, but Tumwater won both the boys and girls team titles at an Evergreen 2A Conference cross country meet at Fort Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday.

Voetberg finished the 5K race in 18 minutes, 41 seconds, more than 15 seconds faster than runner-up Joseph Morrissey of Tumwater. Tumwater’s Coe Johnson finished third.

Centralia’s Daniel Morales was fourth with a time of 19:07 and teammate William Brown was right behind in fifth place with a time of 19:11. Simon Stehr was the other Tiger in the top 10, finishing in seventh at 19:35.

On the girls side, Centralia’s Makayla Erickson took second place with a time of 22:56, 3 seconds behind Tumwater’s Hannah Reynolds. Bella Wallerstedt of Tumwater took third place.

Brynna Rooklidge finished in seventh for Centralia with a time of 25:06, and teammate Tate-Madison Bell finished 2 seconds behind Rooklidge in eighth place. Magdalena Wood-Richardson also placed in the top 10, finishing in ninth with a time of 25:32 for the Tigers.

Centralia is off until next week, when they travel to Black Hills for an Evergreen 2A Conference meet along with Aberdeen on Wednesday.

W.F.West’s Taylor, Moon Win Against Aberdeen

Bearcats’ Dallas Taylor and Emma Moon earned wins in the boys and girls races, and W.F. West won both team events against Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference cross country meet at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis on Wednesday.

Moon crushed the competition, finishing in 21:14, more than a minute faster than runner up Faith Cardenas of Aberdeen.

W.F. West’s Mya Davis placed third (23:13), Savannah Johnson was fourth (24:41) and Olivia Braun was fifth (25:34) for the Bearcats.

For the boys, Taylor narrowly beat teammate Sonny Holub for first place, winning by less than a second at 18:33. W.F. West’s Myles Johnson placed third, two seconds behind Holub at 18:36.

Francisco Lima finished fourth for the Bearcats in a time of 19:09.

The Bearcats’ William Taylor, Jacob Ford, Jasper Ellingson and Nathan Briggs finished sixth through ninth, respectively, to round out the top 10 for W.F. West.

W.F. West is back in action Saturday at the Fort Steilacoom Invitational.

Black Hills Sprints Past Rochester



ROCHESTER — Rochester’s Kelin Pasko and Michala Lowry each finished in second, but Black Hills won both the boys and girls team totals in an Evergreen 2A Conference cross country meet here on Wednesday.

Black Hills’ Shea Bolton placed first for the girls with a time of 22:17, with Lowry finishing in 22:32. Hazel Belknap placed fourth with a time of 24:56 and Savannah Dodge finished fifth in 28:41 for Rochester.

On the boys side, Pasko finished the 5K race in 17:04. Black Hills’ Pearse Popchock took first and teammate Simon Lazar finished in third.

Rochester’s Seth Moceri finished in eighth with a time of 19:04, and teammate Jared Winters placed ninth in 19:34. The Warriors’ Garrett Petersen finished just outside the top 10 in 11th, and Noah Aliff was 12th.

Rochester races again Wednesday, traveling to Chehalis for a meet with Tumwater and W.F. West at Stan Hedwall Park.

Adna’s Apperson Wins at Rainier

RAINIER — Adna’s Austen Apperson won the varsity boys race in a Central 2B League cross country meet here Tuesday.

Apperson, a junior, crossed the finish line of the 5K competition in 16 minutes, 57 seconds, ahead of runner-up Zachary Wright (Onalaska) in 17:19. The Pirates won the boys team competition with 39 points, ahead of host Rainier (59).

Toledo freshman Nicholas Marty was fourth in 18:45, and Morton-White Pass’ Manuel Martinez was sixth in 19:30. Adna’s Adam Mower was ninth in 20:35.

Rainier’s Elaina Hansen won the girls race in 22:03, with Adna’s Lauryn Apperson second in 23:17. MWP’s Kaylen Collette was third in 23:24, teammate Jaylea Rahenkamp was fifth in 23:51, and Elexcious Hampton was 10th in 25:41.

Freshmen Alex Brown (22:19, 26th) and Kenny Beaty (23:12, 32nd) both ran well for their first prep 5K races, according to MWP coach Greg Brown.

MWP’s David Martinez won the middle school boys race (1.7 miles) in 10:21, with teammate Matt Cooper taking second and Toledo’s Tyler Harris in third. Toledo’s Greenlee Clark was second in the girls race (12:15).

Morton-White Pass runs at the Apple Ridge Run in Cowiche on Saturday, and hosts its Fast and Flat meet at Cascade Peaks in Randle on Tuesday with Adna, Kalama, Napavine, Ocosta, Onalaska, Raymond, South Bend, Willapa Valley and Riverside Christian. Adna also runs in Shelton’s meet at Lake Isabelle State Park on Saturday.
