Prep Boys Tennis: Tiger Netters Fall to Eatonville, 5-1

EATONVILLE — Vance Voetberg rallied for a tight win in the No. 1 singles spot, but it wasn't enough for Centralia in a 5-1 loss to the Cruisers here Monday in nonleague boys tennis action.

Voetberg, a sophomore, beat Luke Pate, 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the top singles match.

"During the third and final set Vance really played aggressive tennis. Every opportunity available to him, he came up to the net and dominated," Centralia assistant coach Deb Keahey said. "His serves were consistently strong and precise. As he kept winning points off his serve, he became more and more confident throughout the match."

The Tigers were without top doubles team Ben Kallus and Noah Corwin, and regular No. 2 doubles team member Ravi Patel, due to academic obligations.

"The rest of our team definitely stepped up to fill in where necessary," Keahey said. "All our boys played hard and I was really proud that they just kept fighting."

Centralia finished the regular season with a 2-7-1 record and will enter the Evergreen 2A Conference sub-district tournament on Friday and Saturday at Steamboat Tennis and Athletic Club in Olympia. Singles Voetberg and Josh Burritt, and the doubles teams of Kallus and Corwin, and Fletcher Brown and Cobie Blaser, are slated to compete.
