Prep Baseball Roundup: Napavine Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Toledo

NAPAVINE — Toledo scored two runs in the first inning, but Napavine took the lead in the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 win in a Central 2B League baseball game here on Monday.

Napavine’s Levi Gates pitched five innings in relief, striking out five while allowing four hits, two walks and no runs.

At the plate, Gates had a hit, run and RBI. Laythan Demarest added two hits and Landon Dahl added a hit and a run.

“For the beginning of March, we didn’t play too bad. We need to clean a lot of stuff up, a lot of it is just inexperience,” Napavine coach Brian Demarest said. “We have a lot of young kids out there kind of learning as we go, guys playing out of position. All in all, for the beginning of March, to get a win in league, we’ll take it.”

Christian Sanjurjo started the game for Toledo and allowed no runs on one hit and three walks while striking out three batters in the no decision.

Tommy Kinsman was 2 for 3 with two RBI’s and Kyle Bauter and Cody Towns each had a hit and a run for Toledo.

“I thought they played well. We had opportunities, had the bases loaded, nobody out. We had guys on base virtually every inning,” Toledo coach Jeff Davis said. “...We got a little wild there in the middle of the game. We had some walks and hit batters and it’s tough to defense the walk. It was a good ballgame for a fan, a better ballgame if you’re a Napavine fan.”

With two outs in the first inning, Kinsman stepped to the plate and hit a 2-RBI single to help Toledo to an early lead.

The Tigers got on the board in the fourth inning as Gates knocked in a run with a single to cut the Toledo lead to 2-1.

Napavine took the lead in the fifth inning, with Toledo walking two batters with the bases loaded. The Indians had a chance in the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs, but Gates was able to catch a pop up in foul territory to seal the win.

Napavine (1-0, 1-0) hosts Elma on Wednesday in a nonnleague game, while Toledo (0-1, 0-1) hosts Adna on Friday in a C2BL game.

Wahkiakum No Hits Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in Opener

PE ELL — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s Cub Bair threw a complete game three-hitter, but Wahkiakum had three pitchers combine for a no hitter and a 3-0 win in a Central 2B League baseball game here on Monday.

Bair went the distance on 82 pitches with 51 strikes, and he struck out five batters while only allowing three hits and two walks.

James Anderson, Zach Brown and Terris Record combined for the no hitter for Wahkiakum.

“Cub was stellar. The defense was phenominal, their defense was phenominal,” PWV coach Kelly Barnum said. “It was a great ballgame for the first of season.”

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth, and with runners on first and third, Wahkiakum hit a 3-run homer to give the Mules the lead for good.

Barnum was pleased with the defense of Keyton Barnum, Tyson Nissell and Frank Roonsburg against Wahkiakum.

PWV (0-1, 0-1) travels to face Winlock on Friday in a C2BL game.

Toutle Lake Takes Down Onalaska

ONALASKA — Onalaska hosted Toutle Lake in the Loggers’ season opener, with Toutle Lake scoring three runs in the first inning to cruise to a 7-1 win in a Central 2B League baseball game here on Monday.

Tristen Lawrence had an RBI single to bring home the only run of the game for Onalaska.

Toutle Lake started the game with three runs in the first inning. The Loggers scored their lone run in the second inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

It was all Toutle Lake after that, with the Ducks scoring a run in the fourth, a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to seal the win.

“At times, we looked pretty good. At other times, we looked like the first game,” Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley said. “We got off to a rocky start, but once we settled in, it wasn’t bad. Toutle Lake is a quality team.”

Stanley was happy with his team’s pitching, with Lawrence, Mathew Kurzeika, Tanner McLean and AJ Volk combining to allow just one walk.

Onalaska (0-1, 0-1) travels to Kalama on Friday for a C2BL game.

Tigers Fall to North Mason in Eight Innings

NAPAVINE — North Mason scored in the top of the eighth inning and held on to beat Napavine, 5-4, here Saturday in the Tigers’ 2018 baseball opener.

Napavine out-hit its 2A guests, 7-5, but committed four errors in the loss.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, starting things off with a hit batter, an error, a walk and then a run-scoring hit batter. Laythan Demarest drove in a run with a single, and Jake Darden drew a walk to score another run. The Tigers led 4-0 after three frames and 4-1 after six, but four Napavine errors in the final two innings helped North Mason pick up the win.

Demarest and Seth Butler each went 2 for 4, while Garret Shannon, Dawson Stanley and Ben Woodrum each had hits.

Woodrum worked the first three innings, striking out five without allowing a hit or a walk.

Napavine (0-1) hosts Toledo open Central 2B League play on Monday.

Bearcats Drop Two on Road Trip

ANACORTES — W.F. West opened its season with a pair of losses here Saturday, falling to Anacortes, 9-3, and to Burlington-Edison, 4-1, in nonleague baseball action.

Anacortes, who the Bearcats beat in last year’s state semifinals, tallied seven hits and took advantage of three W.F. West errors in the Cats’ opener.

Brandon White started on the mound for W.F. West and allowed two hits, with four strikeouts, in 1 ⅔ innings, though Anacortes scored four unearned runs in that span.

Brock Jones, Drew Reynolds, Josiah Johnson and Daniel Fagerness all had hits for W.F. West in Game 1, with Johnson driving in a pair of runs.

Burlington-Edison, meanwhile, had just three hits in its afternoon win, scoring two runs in the first inning and never trailing.

Nole Wollan went 2 for 3 for W.F. West, and Jones and Fagerness each had hits. Fagerness started on the mound, striking out five and allowing three hits in four innings.

W.F. West (0-2) plays at Kelso on Wednesday.

Rochester Pounds Tenino 15-0

TENINO — The Warriors jumped out early and rolled here Saturday afternoon, drubbing rival Tenino 15-0 in nonleague baseball action.

Jared Winters led off Rochester’s nine-run first inning with a double and Tyler Soderbeck hit a three-run homer four batters later. Cole Wintrip added a single and Brody Smith doubled in the first frame, which was helped along by a pair of Beaver errors, two walks and a hit batter.

“Rochester came out early and often and took it to us,” Tenino coach Conner Hogue said. “We weren’t prepared mentally and as a coaching staff we have to fix that with our players. It was a wakeup call, for sure.”

Smith went 2 for 4 for Rochester, while Soderback was 2 for 2 with the homer and a double. Wintrip went 2 for 3 with a double.

Ethan Worden got the win on the mound for the Warriors, giving up three hits in three innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

Tenino (0-1-1) plays at North Mason on Wednesday. Rochester (1-0) hosts Elma on Thursday.
