Mountaineers Best Beavers in Opener

RAINIER — The undersized Beavers ran into some shooting woes and one 6-foot-2 powerhouse in a 32-25 nonleague girls basketball loss here in their season premiere on Monday.

The tall player in question was Peyton Dungan, who rattled off 21 points despite Tenino's best defensive efforts.

"We couldn't keep her covered," Tenino coach Tano Bailon said. "We're not a very tall team and she is. We were able to keep her from really going off on us, but she definitely worked us."

The Beavers were led by freshman guard Kaylee Schow with 9 points. Rhian Mathis and Ryann Wachter both added 6 for Tenino.

A 5-point second quarter and 4 points in the final frame hampered Tenino's effort, but with three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior starting, Bailon likes the potential he sees on the court.

"We went flat in the fourth, but I see some good stuff coming," Bailon said. "It was good to see the girls working out there."

Tenino (0-1) will host Rainier for a rematch on Dec. 7.
