Monday's Prep Tennis Roundup: Centralia Edges Black Hills on Sets

TUMWATER — Centralia and Black Hills each won three matches, but the Tigers earned the wins by winning in sets 7-6 here in an Evergreen 2A League battle here on Monday.

Black Hills’ Gunnar Nelson defeated Vance Voetberg, 6-4, 7-6. Centralia’s Cobie Blaser got the win over Jonathan Shade, 6-2, 7-6. Nathan Deanon took the No. 3 singles win, defeating Parker Johnson, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Centralia’s Ben Corwin and Ryan Mack defeated Hunter Grabski and Sam Whipple 6-2, 7-5, and the Tigers’ Josh Burrit and Stephen Phelps topped Brenden Brown and Dayton McGuire, 6-4, 6-4. Black Hills’ Jake Perry and Josh Kukas earned the win over Alex Snideman and Zach Kaiser, 6-1, 6-2.

“Ben and Ryan earned a victory despite fighting illness, and (Parker) Johnson played his first singles match and forced three sets to secure a team win,” Centralia coach Keith Hopkins said. “Vance battled hard against a tough opponent, the team had too many good things to report.”

Centralia (3-3, 3-2) hosts Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference match on Wednesday.

W.F. West Falls to R.A. Long



The Bearcats couldn’t quite pull out a victory over R.A. Long on Monday, falling 4-2 in nonleague boys tennis in Chehalis on Monday.

R.A. Long’s Eric Grimes defeated E.J. Matagi, 6-0, 6-0, and Lumberjack Ethan Chung topped Alec Ibanez, 6-2, 6-0. W.F. West’s Levi Walters earned the win in No. 3 singles, defeating Daylen Box, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, R.A. Long’s David Pang and Miles Gilchmot halted Andrew Painter and Andrew Pak, 6-2, 6-2. Lumberjacks’ Chris Ofstun and Hanzah Amjad took down Brandan Touhey and Andrew Gregory, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Bearcats’ Joey Powe and Cole Nishiyama took the victory against Sam Farnham and Peter May, 7-5, 6-3.

“E.J. played some good points, Grimes is a sophomore who took fourth in state last year,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “Powe and Nishiyama did a good job and Walters did well too.”

W.F. West (1-5, 1-3) travels to Tumwater to take on Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference match on Wednesday.
