Monday's Prep Girls Soccer: Pirates Plunder Life Christian

Posted

ADNA – Last year a talented Adna soccer team saw their championship aspirations end in the state semifinals with a one-goal loss to the ladies from Life Christian Academy. On Monday the Pirates wasted precious little time exacting their revenge on the Eagles and wound up walking off their home turf with a declarative 10-0 win.

By the end of the fifth minute of play Adna had already staked out a 4-0 lead, at which point they started sharing the ball around the field on offense just to see how many different Pirates they could get in the scoring column. That approach resulted in scores by seven different Adna players along with assists off the boots of four separate scalawags on the crew.

Even though it is a new season and many of last year’s Eagles players have flown the nest in the interim, Adna goalkeeper Makaela Meister said that it was cathartic to put a whooping on the school that knocked her team out of title contention last season.

“Definitely, especially with them being state champs last year it was super cool,” noted Meister. “We knew that Kalama had beat them by a lot but we were kind of nervous because you never really know, maybe Kalama is just really good this year. So we had some nerves coming into it.”

Payton Aselton kicked things off for Adna with a goal in the second minute that was assisted by Alyssa Dougherty. Cierra Swenson got in on the scoring next with a goal in the third minute and Rachel Burke scored in the fourth minute on another assist by Dougherty. Ten minutes later Dougherty was notching a goal of her own thanks to an assist by Aselton that put the Pirates up by four scores with more than three quarters of the game remaining.

Adna coach Juli Aselton said that the lopsided scoring put her team in an awkward position. On one hand she knew that her players were looking forward to securing redemption for last season’s loss to Life Christian. On the other hand, she knew that the Eagles were playing without some of their difference makers from a year ago and she wanted to keep the game from devolving into a circus.

“That’s why when we started off and we got those first four, and then it was like, okay, we need to cut it off and just make pretty soccer,” explained Aselton.

Still, Adna stayed on the offensive and managed to post two more goals before the end of the half, both of which were scored by Zarine Walker. Her first score came off of an assist from Cierra Swenson in the 30th minute and then she scored on a breakaway in the 37th minute to push the lead to 6-0.

After halftime, Coach Aselton decided to keep her daughter, Payton, glued to the bench in order to give minutes and scoring chances to other players. She also replaced Meister in the goalie box with senior defender Olivia Rodriguez, who isn’t even listed on the roster as a tender.

That lineup change was music to the earls of Meister who says she frequently yearns for the freedom offered by the big green field beyond the goalie box.

“I used to play the field a lot and just having the ball at my feet and playing with girls that I’ve played with for a long time, it’s nice to get back out there,” said Meister, who finished the game with two assists and a goal on the offensive end. She didn’t collect any saves on the night, but neither did Rodriguez since the Eagles were unable to muster even one shot on goal.

Meister’s first assist came just three minutes out of intermission when she found Cierra Swenson for a goal. Dougherty launched the next score in the 46th minute before Meister got in on the action in the 56th minute of play. Pavie Atkinson pushed the scoring into double digits with a goal that was assisted by Meister in the 60th minute.

Aside from getting her opportunities to go on the offensive, Meister recognized that the big margin of victory provided her less experienced teammates a chance to get their varsity legs underneath them before the stake get too high.

“It’s definitely good and helping the younger girls,” said Meister. “They have JV games coming up but being able to play with us is helping them.”

Aselton agreed with her junior goaltender, noting that it’s not often that nearly an entire junior varsity unit get the opportunity to take the field together in a varsity game. She said that the fresh personnel helped to keep her team focused through the final horn.

“There was no lack of intensity, that’s for sure,” said Aselton, who pointed out the play of freshmen Summer White and Walker in particular.

Aselton said she expects Ocosta and Kalama to provide the biggest challenge for the Central 2B League title this year. She also thew Onalaska out there as a team to keep an eye on. Monday she was most aware of the way her veteran players helped to keep the rest her charges focused on the task at hand.

“I was pretty proud of Cierra because she’s a pretty quick forward and she did a good job of trying to distribute the ball It’s tough when you are a forward and you’re quick and you see the open goal and you’re trying to spread the ball around,” said Aselton. “I could say the same thing about Payton too where she brought the ball all the way down field with ease and then dished it off. They think a lot of their teammates and they are trying to help everybody.”

Adna (2-0) will host Ocosta on Wednesday.

Winlock padded the lead in the 52nd minute on Barragan’s second goal of the night. Toutle Lake’s Ali Olson scored in the 65th minute, but the Cardinals held on down the stretch for the win.

“We played well. We’re both pretty evenly matched and don’t have many girls that have played before,” Winlock coach Brian Ziese said. “It was a back and forth. We had a lot of chances we didn’t capitalize on. The only thing we could have done better on was winning stuff in the air. Our girls started stepping up.”

Onalaska Tops Toledo

Onalaska scored early in the first half for a 2-0 lead at halftime. Toledo battled back in the second half, but was unable to get on the scoresheet.

“The first half was definitely a little rough. Onalaska is young and ambitious, they were able to pin us on our own back,” Toledo coach Noel Vasquez said. “After halftime, we turned it around on them really. We did the same thing they did to us, just couldn’t put it in the back of the net.”

Toledo goalkeeper Kaylee Veigel recorded nine saves in the loss.
