ADNA — The Pirates put together a classic well-rounded performance here on Monday as they jettisoned Taholah 60-47 in a non-league boys basketball affair.
Adna posted 14 points in each of the first two quarters to take a 28-20 lead into the half and never looked back as they outscored the Chitwins 32-27 the rest of the way. The Pirates shot 46 percent from the field and knocked down nine of 15 free throw attempts to secure the win.
Adna’s Cole Fay led all scorers with 17 points while Trevor Minkoff added 10.
The Adna defense was on point early on and limited the Chitwins to just eight points in the first quarter. Adding to their woes was the fact that Taholah was unable to get to the free throw line at all on the night.
James Orosco led Taholah with 16 points.
Lyle Metzenberg added nine points in the Adna victory. Braden Thomas scored eight, while Austen Apperson and Zander-Blankenship Todd added six points each.
Adna (10-3, 4-0 league) will host Wahkiakum on Wednesday.
Chinooks Clip Tigers Just for Fun
KALAMA — Napavine fell 62-52 to Kalama here on Monday in a boys basketball happening but there was a silver lining hidden in the outcome — It was a non-league game.
The late season non-league game is the result of an extended football season that saw the two schools meet up at the Tacoma Dome in the state title game. With most of the players on each team strapping on shoulder pads until the end of November their early season matchup was bumped back to the new year.
Kalama held a lead on their home court for the duration of the game as Napavine struggled to maintain possession and momentum.
“The main two things is we had too many turnovers and we gave up too many offensive rebounds. We gave up 15 offensive rebounds,” said Napaine coach Rex Stanley. “It’s hard to win when you give up 15 offensive rebounds”
Tommy Brandenburg led Kalama with 13 points while Max Ross scored 12. Alex Dyer and Grant Vandenberg each scored 10 points for the Chinooks.
Napavine gathered their druthers and made a run in the final quarter to cut their deficit to six with just over 1:30 remaining but it was too little too late.
“Too many second chances. Rebounding has been the strength of our team so it’s just one of those games I guess,” said Stanley.
Stanley noted that Kalama is loaded with upperclassmen and all-around athletes.
“They are a little bit like us in that they are athletic and better athletes than basketball players. Therein lies the 15 offensive rebounds. They play hard and kind of get after you,” said Stanley.
Dawson Stanley scored a game-high 21 points for Napavine. Keith Olson notched yet another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Cade Evander added 15 points.
Napavine (8-6, 3-1 league) will host Mossyrock on Thursday.
Girls Basketball
Adna’s Aselton Picks Mary M. Knight’s Pockets
ADNA — Payton Aselton posted an odd double-double here Monday night to help her hometown Pirates get over on Mary M. Knight 52-36 in a non-league girls basketball contest.
Aselton scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and most notably, snatched 17 steals in the Adna win.
Despite those staggering stats Adna found themselves trailing by a pair of points after one quarter.
“We pretty much got off to a slow start. We weren’t ready to play and I didn’t like our energy at all,” said Adna coach Chris Bannish.
The Pirates got going in the second quarter with 20 points and held a 29-18 lead at half but Bannish still wasn’t satisfied with his squad’s production or consistency on the court.
“Aselton brought it today with 23 and 17 steals and we made some adjustments at half by bringing in some freshmen off the bench,” said Bannish. “I thought that Summer White gave us some great minutes off the bench, especially for a freshman.”
Bannish noted that freshman Presley Smith also played hard for the Pirates. White scored six points and Ellie Sliva added 11 points for Adna.
Adna (10-4, 3-1 league) will host Winlock on Tuesday.
