Monday's Girls Basketball: Mossyrock Downs Battle Ground

BATTLE GROUND — Mossyrock’s Andee Nelson recorded a double-double to help the Vikings win 45-31 against Battle Ground in a non-league girls basketball game here on Monday.

Nelson scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Hailey Brooks grabbed 11 rebounds and added six points and Payton Torrey chipped in seven points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Faith Mulligan also had seven points, three assists and three steals for the Vikings.

Mallory Meyer tallied 14 points to lead the Tigers.

The Vikings held Battle Ground to just eight made field goals and won the rebounding battle, 41-27.

Mossyrock led 10-7 after one quarter and built a 25-16 lead at halftime. The Vikings won the second half to complete the victory.

“We started off a little slow but kept the game close. Our buckets weren’t falling first half. The second quarter, we got some more looks and executed better on offense,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “We controlled the game speed wise and it helped us get control in the second half.”

Madison Vigre also had three assists for the Vikings as coach Moorcroft noted how the Vikings shared the ball well on Monday.

Mossyrock (3-0) travels to Wahkiakum on Wednesday for a non-league game.

W.F. West Shuts Down North Thurston

North Thurston scored no more than eight points in a quarter as the W.F. West defense was rock solid in a 69-18 win in a non-league girls basketball game in Chehalis on Monday.

Drea Brumfield scored 16 points to lead the Bearcats. Taya McCallum added 13 points and seven rebounds. Annika Waring tallied 11 points and eight rebounds and Tehani Henry also grabbed eight rebounds.

Jaclynann Reid led the Rams with seven points.



North Thurston made just seven field goals.

W.F. West led 16-3 after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 31-6 at intermission. The Bearcats kept it going in the second half, outscoring the Rams 38-12.

“It was pretty good. We tried to up the tempo early on which is something we haven't done. We tried to apply more pressure,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said. “The third quarter was our best quarter. We had more energy and it helped us get things moving a little bit. It was a good team win. Everybody that went in really contributed, up and down the roster, we did good across the board.”

W.F. West (2-0) travels to Fife on Thursday.

Elma Holds Off Toledo

ELMA — The Eagles started strong and were able to hold off Toledo down the stretch to earn a 48-40 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Monday.

Kal Schaplow and Stacie Spahr each scored 10 points and Spahr grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Alejandra Cadarso added six points and eight rebounds.

Kali Rambo scored 13 points to lead Elma and Ella Moore chipped in 10 points.

Toledo won the rebounding battle, 31-28, but Elma was able to shoot just a little bit better from the field.

Elma jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter, but the Indians responded and cut the lead to 24-22 at halftime. The Eagles won the third quarter 16-9 to pull ahead and maintained the lead down the stretch for the win.

“We came out and they got a pretty good lead on us,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We settled down and clawed back into it, tied it up, but we couldn't get over that hump.”

Toledo (1-1) hosts Rainier Christian at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a non-league game.
