TUMWATER — W.F. West had eight of nine players reach the second day after competing in the first day of the District 4 2A Sub-District boys tennis tournament at Tumwater Valley on Monday.
In singles, W.F. West’s Luke Walters started the day with a win over Black Hills’ Ishan Shah with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Walters fell to Centralia’s Ben Corwin in the second round in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Walters bounced back with a win over Tumwater’s Peyton Peterson with scores of 6-3, 7-5. Walters will face Black Hills’ Jonathan Schade on Wednesday morning.
Andrew Pak started the day with a first round bye before facing Schade to start his day, falling in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Pak rebounded in his next match to stay alive with a win against Tumwater’s Noah Thompkins with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Pak will face Corwin to begin play on Wednesday.
Gabe Cuestas faced Schade in the first round and lost with set scores of 6-4, 6-3 to end his season.
In doubles, W.F. West’s Joseph Chung and Cade Cameron started the day with a first round bye before facing Tumwater’s Sawyer Loughee and Alex Abbott, winning with set scores of 6-1, 6-2. Chung and Cameron will face Centralia’s Johan Lopez and Landon Kaut on Wednesday.
The Bearcats No. 2 duo of Colin Slattery and Caleb Walters started Monday with a win against Centralia’s Brandon Wilkerson and Jackson Buzzard. Slattery and Walters won the first set 6-4, but Buzzard and Wilkerson took the second set 7-5. In a 10-point tiebreaker, Slattery and Walters prevailed 12-10.
Slattery and Walters moved on to face Aberdeen’s Cody Sayers and Brice Kola, earning the win with scores of 7-5, 6-4. Slattery and Walters will face Tumwater’s Jake Johnson and Gunnar Fields on Wednesday.
Jacob Blomdahl and Christian Iverson — W.F. West’s No. 3 doubles team — started the day with a win against Black Hills’ Ryan Cokl and Kyle Lince with scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Iverson and Blomdahl ran into Johnson and Fields in their next match, falling 6-4, 7-5. Blomdahl and Iverson face Sayers and Kola on Wednesday.
“I have no qualms about the way our kids played, they played very well overall,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “Taking 8 of 9 kids into the second day, that’s pretty good.”
The top 4 in singles and doubles advance to the District 4 2A tournament next week at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver. The sub-district tournament will resume Wednesday morning in Tumwater.
