Monday's 2B Softball: Titans Bats Come Alive in Game 2 to Earn Split With Napavine

Posted

PE ELL — Napavine’s Abbi Music dominated Pe Ell-Willapa Valley for 10 innings in the circle before the Titan bats came to life in the second game for a 22-12 win to salvage a split in a Central 2B League doubleheader here Monday.

The outcome keeps Napavine in first place in the C2BL standings with an 11-1 league record, while PWV sits in second at 12-2. The teams met in both the District 4 and State 2B championship games last year, with PWV taking both titles.

Music struck out 10 while allowing two hits without a walk in Napavine’s 3-0 opening-game win.

“The first game was lights out,” Napavine coach Chad Williams said. “Abbi looked good. Abbi looked like what we expect Abbi to look like and I was extremely happy with our defense.”

Maddie Thompson had a hit and two runs and Music added a hit and a run.

“Abbi Music is a tough pitcher. She had us on the ropes, I give a lot of credit to her,” PWV coach Ken Olson said. “That’s a well-coached team. There’s a reason why they’ve only lost this game, that’s a testament to them.”

Game 2 was a much different story, with the Tigers jumping out to a 10-0 lead after 3 ½ innings.

The PWV bats, though, didn’t stay quiet long. The Titans collected nine hits and took advantage of eight Napavine errors to score 14 runs in the fourth and lead 14-10.

The Titans added three more in the fifth and scored five in the sixth to end the game early.

Sid Pollard was 3 for 5 with four runs and four RBIs for PWV, while Britney Patrick was 3 for 4 with a triple, a home run, four RBIs and four runs.

Kamryn Adkins was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs and Jeorgi Ritzman was 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run.

“I can’t say enough about those guys out there. We scored 22 runs in three innings. I was hoping that they would cut it loose and once the ball starts to fall our way, then it just keeps going, and then everybody feels confident,” Olson said. “Maybe in that first game we weren’t as confident because she was throwing smoke. They were making plays, but our team is obviously resilient.”

The Tigers had 12 errors in Game 2.

“I said it before and I’ll say it again, anytime you see a pitcher six, seven times, they’re going to catch up to her and they did,” Williams said. “Overall, I’m extremely happy with the results from today. We hit the ball hard. We did have far more errors than I’d like to see. If we clean that up, we’re fine. Those are very flexible things as far as looking forward.”

Music was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs. Ada Williams was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs and Taylor Denault was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run. Thompson was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Napavine.

The loss was the first of the season for Napavine (12-1 overall), but the Tigers are still in the driver’s seat for a league title with a game against Onalaska on Wednesday, a twinbill with Morton-White Pass on Saturday and a May 2 game against Kalama.

“We can still meet our goals as far as our first goal goes. We’re going to take it easy tomorrow, and we’ve got a tough Ony game on Wednesday,” Williams said. “I know they beat Adna earlier tonight, and that’s going to be a dog fight. (Logger coach) Kenny’s (Ulery) doing a good job with that group of kids. We’re not looking past them.”

PWV (13-2 overall) faces Onalaska on Saturday in a C2BL doubleheader.

Loggers Split With Adna

“The girls played really well. I thought Amy Henderson pitched well, she moved the ball around and threw one of her better games of the year against a very good team,” Onalaska coach Ken Ulery said. “I liked our energy attitude and effort the whole first game. The girls haven’t beat Adna in a while. They feel they’re playing good and can play with anybody.”

Jenikka Poppe pitched the opener for Adna, striking out six and giving up three runs — all of which were unearned — without walking a batter, and went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Haley Rainey and Kooper Mohney each had hits for Adna, but the Pirates committed four errors in Game 1.
