Monday's 2B Softball: Loggers Let Loose on Napavine in District Opener

Posted

Napavine was determined to make a game of it here at Borst Park on Monday night. The Loggers were having none of it.

After nullifying a surge of sorts out of the Tigers it was Onalaska who went to lay claim to a decisive 19-5 victory in their District 4 2B softball tournament opener.

The Loggers carved out an early lead with five runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of hits by Hannah James and Chaise Cadwell and a wave of walks and errors. Onalaska added two runs in the third with a double by Alex Cleveland-Barrera and a single by Callie Lawrence.

Little by little, though, Napavine chipped away at the deficit. The Tigers scored a run in the second inning and a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings that cut the Loggers’ lead to 7-5. That two spot in the fourth inning came off of a home run by starting pitcher Ada Williams and Napavine seemed to have courted momentum over to their side of the field.

That’s where the Loggers and Tigers saw things differently.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Onalaska answered back with a dozen runs of their own that put to rest any doubt about the inevitable outcome.

Onalaska coach Rich Teitzel was proud of his team for making adjustments against Williams in the batter's box and finding a way to put the game away.

“We had to go up to bat solid and figure out what pitch we were going to take. Either we were going to hit a fastball or we were going to take the change up,” noted Teitzel. “Once we went up there with one pitch in mind. You saw what happened.”

Cleveland-Barrera hit a three-run home run in that long fourth inning and finished the day just a triple short of the cycle. James had three hits, two RBI, and three runs scored for the Loggers while Cadwell and Henderson added two hits each.

Amy Henderson pitched all five innings for Onalaska to earn the win. She allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out four Tigers.

“Amy Henderson threw a great game. Gave up one bomb but other than that threw a great game,” said Teitzel.

The Loggers’ coach added that he wasn’t upset with his pitcher for giving up a tank to such a fearsome hitter. He did find one area to critique, though.

“It was the the one before that that we walked that got me,” Teitzel said with a chuckle.

Williams had two hits and scored two runs for Napavine. Kaiya Larson added a hit and scored a run.

The Loggers played nearly flawless defense behind their pitcher to help limit any damage the Tigers’ hitters could do. Teitzel said that’s the kind of performance he thinks his team can bring every day now that it’s playoff time, where there’s little room for error.

“My whole infield and outfield was solid,” Teitzel said. “The last couple of games they’re coming together and starting to shine. I think playing a team like Toutle Lake and losing a tough round brought them awake.”

Onalaska will face Ocosta on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Borst Park in the quarterfinals.

Winlock No Hits Ilwaco

Winlock’s Jenna Jones pitched a no hitter to lead the Cardinals to a 15-0 win over Ilwaco in a District 4 2B softball tournament loser out game at Borst Park in Centralia on Monday.

Jones allowed no hits over five innings of work while striking out nine batters. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and four RBI.

Makayla Allbritton was 2-for-5 with three runs and Raychel Squibb was 2-for-3 with three runs. Addison Hall was 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and two walks and Cheleena Squibb hit a double for the Cardinals.

“Great. I think we did exactly what we were supposed to do,” Winlock coach Chantel Nelson said. “Over the weekend, we worked on smaller details, the things we haven’t yet picked up and they did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

Winlock scored five runs in the first inning and two runs in the second and third innings. The Cardinals plated six runs in the fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule.

“Super proud of Jenna Jones for her pitching and the team agreed that Makayla Allbritton deserved recognition for her hustle in the field and on the bases,” Nelson said.

Winlock faces Adna at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. The Pirates won the only meeting between the two teams on March 29, 15-0.

“The finer details for sure. We were in the same situation last year where we made it to down to the last little bit so we know that we have to play tough and we’re going back to these tougher teams that we haven’t seen since the beginning of the season,” Nelson said. “If we can buckle down and get ready to go, I think we can show some success.”

Toledo Takes Down Raymond

Toledo’s Payson Hoiseck allowed just one hit to lead the Indians to an 11-1 win in five innings over Raymond in a District 4 2B softball tournament loser out game at Borst Park in Centralia on Monday.

Hoiseck threw all five innings in the circle, allowing one run and one hit with five strikeouts.

At the plate, Genevive Kalista was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a RBI and Abbie Marcil was 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI, two runs and a walk. Kyleigh Holmes was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run.

“Amazing actually, I don’t think we’ve had any errors,” Toledo coach Ashley Gieseke said. “That’s something I’ve been asking of them for a while, just focus on those plays, do what you can, go the extra mile and they did it.”

Gieseke highlighted the play of Hoiseck in the circle and Marcil behind the plate, with each eighth grader contributing in the field and Hoiseck hit her first career home run.

Toledo opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning and followed it up with four runs in the third inning. The Indians plated one run in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth to wrap the game up early.

Toledo advances to the double elimination bracket and will take on Toutle Lake at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Borst Park. The Ducks swept the two games in the regular season.

“It feels great,” Gieseke said. “I think everybody is excited and we’ve just got to keep our heads up and keep playing our game and we’ll do alright.”

MWP Sinks Hyaks to Start Playoff Run

The Timberwolves’ offense didn’t leave any room for suspense at Borst Park in Centralia on Monday as they put North Beach away 16-1 in three innings to begin their adventure through the District 4 2B softball tournament.

Morton-White Pass put up three runs in the first inning and three runs in the third inning in order to provide perfect bookends to a monstrous 10 run second frame. The T-Wolves pounded out 12 hits on the day (a four per inning average) in order to end the game early via the mercy rule.

Despite that huge offensive output MWP coach Rob Hazen felt like holding his team to a particularly high standard postgame. It’s a sterling set of postseason expectations, if you will.

“I think we’re more geared up for the faster ball,” Hazen said of his team’s effort against a soft tossing Hyak hurler. “It took us awhile to get going. The pitcher had a little movement on her pitch. We moved up in the box. We had a home run, a couple off the fence and just started attacking the ball.”

Taylor Hazen was the player responsible for the big blast to help power the Timberwolves at the plate. It was a two-run shot. She added another hit, a run batted in, and two other runs scored to the stat sheet in the game. Hailey Brooks added three hits, including a pair of doubles, to go with two RBI and three runs scored. Starting pitcher Jaiden Linder helped her own cause with a pair of hits and a run scored while Shelby Karns drove in two runs on one hit.

Linder allowed just one hit over the three innings to earn the win. Four of the nine outs she tallied came via strikeout.

Coach Hazen said he’s happy with where his team is at as they come down the home stretch of the season.

“We’ve got Pe Ell-Valley for our first game on Wednesday and we’re looking to give them a run,” Hazen said. “They’re a pretty good ball club. They’ve got good pitchers, the Adkins girl, but we can give them a run for their money. And if not we’ll come back and we’ve got one more shot. We’ve got to win one of two to get to state so we’re geared up and ready to go.”

Morton-White Pass will play Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Wednesday at 2 pm. at Borst Park in the district quarterfinals.
