Local Soccer: Contreras, Garibay Headline 2018 1A Trico All-League Team

The Toledo-Winlock United soccer squad was highly touted once again in a recent release of the 1A Trico All-League boys soccer team, with a plethora of players from the club making the cut.

United earned top honors on both sides of the ball. Isaac Garibay, a junior, was named the Offensive Player of the Year as part of a United team that scored 69 goals in 1A Trico League play.

United was recognized for its defensive dominance, as well. Keeper Alan Contreras, also a junior, was lights out all year, allowing just seven goals in league play. Thanks to his efforts, Contreras was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Of course, United’s execution and composure doesn’t come without the right system and head coach. Horst Malunat has both winning games and awards down to a science. The United club boss brought home Coach of the Year for an astounding fourth consecutive season, this time splitting the honor with La Center’s Reece Scragg.

The two other most prestigious awards were claimed by La Center. Wildcats Hunter Leach and Cody Leffel were named Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.

The rest of the all-league accolades were also littered with United players. Junior forward Gustavo Barragan, as well as midfielders Andreas Malunat (a junior) and Nicholas Patching (a senior) were all named to the offensive first team. Senior defender Dawson Hall served as the lone United player on the defensive first team.

Senior forward Daniel Guijosa was named to the offensive second team, while junior defenders Brian Wood and Ivan Cibrian rounded out the defensive second team.

The all-league awards serves as a celebratory bit of closure to the regular season, but United has its sights set on more urgent matters. The Toledo-Winlock tandem continue their bid for a state title in a loser-out state quarterfinal today against Wahluke.
