Legion Roundup: Renegades Defeat Eatonville 8-1

Posted

Brandon White struck out 13 batters while allowing just one run as the I-5 Jeep Renegades earned an 8-1 win over Eatonville in a Legion AA league game at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis on Monday.

Eatonville scored its lone run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Renegades scored two in the third inning to take the lead, and added on three more in the fourth inning for a comfortable 5-1 advantage.

The Renegades tacked on three more in the sixth and let White lead the way to victory.

“When he (White) was hitting his spots, he was perfect,” Renegades coach Bryan Bullock said. “When he got behind in the count, then he would start mix and matching some pitches, but when he was on, he was fine. When he got ahead, he was dominant. He could throw some offspeed pitches and once he was locating with his fastball, he was fine.”

White helped his cause at the plate with three hits, and teammate Bryce Dobyns also had three hits. Max Miller, Austin Emery and Josiah Johnson each had two hits for the Renegades.

“Once they kind of woke up a little bit and realized we’re playing a baseball game, they eventually started swinging the bat a little bit,” Bullock said.

The Renegades are in action today against Olympia, with the doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. in Olympia.

Note: The Renegades and Eatonville completed a rained out game, with the Renegades earning a 12-3 win.

RBI Splits Doubleheader with Prairie

WINLOCK — Rural Baseball Incorporated dropped the first game against Prairie 5-2, but bounced back to earn a 6-1 victory in the second game to split a league doubleheader here on Saturday.

In the first game, Prairie jumped out to 1-0 lead after the first inning, and pushed the lead to 3-1 after three innings. Prairie scored a run in each the fourth and fifth innings to make it 5-1. RBI scored a run in the seventh, but weren’t able to complete the comeback.

RBI had five errors and walked eight batters in the loss. RBI had nine hits, to Prairie’s four.

“When you have eight total walks and five errors, that’s a pretty potent concoction,” RBI coach Jordan Nailon said. “It was a chronic thing where we would compile an error here, walk here. That stuff really compiles and it’s taxing on your pitchers.”

Zach Weinert was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and Gunnar Brooks was 2 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Ryan Schmunk was 2 for 3 for RBI.

In Game 2, a four-run fifth inning helped RBI earn the win, along with Mason Schimmel’s brilliant performance on the mound.

Schimmel pitched six innings, allowing no runs, two hits while striking out nine batters.

“He (Schimmel) showed up with his pants covered in axle grease,” Nailon said. “He must have been working on his rig before the game. He had his workshop cheese going. Total blue collar effort out there, could have easily gone seven.”

Schmunk had another good game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI. Brooks had a hit, two walks and two stolen bases and Berto Patraca had an RBI single in the sixth inning.

“We played a lot of good baseball, moved guys around, scored on sacrifice flies. It was a clean, nice, well played baseball game on our side,” Nailon said. “Not a lot of offensive standouts. Get a guy on base, able to move him around and have productive outs and we had guys coming off the bench and doing their job.”

RBI plays a league doubleheader against the Timberwolves today, starting at 3 p.m. at Heritage HS in Vancouver.

Titus-Will’s Selstrom Throws Shutout

Broc Selstrom threw a four-hitter shutout, and Centralia Titus-Will topped Hoquiam 8-0 in AA Legion baseball action in Centralia Monday.

Selstrom struck out 10 Hoquiam batters and walked one.

“He was very solid. He pitched a heck of a game,” Titus-Will coach Rex Ashmore said. “It was nice to see for him, but also for us because we had doubleheader yesterday and we needed that.”

Nick Stulkin went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Titus-Will. Centralia took command of the game with five runs in the third inning.

“We had solid contributions throughout,” Ashmore said. “The kids came out with good energy. I was really proud of the effort.”

Centralia outhit Hoquiam 8-4. Hoquiam committed five errors in the loss.

Titus-Will faces Elma in a doubleheader on Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m.

Titus-Will, Rochester Split Doubleheader

ROCHESTER — Centralia Titus-Will scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 11-9 win, but Rochester responded with a 5-2 victory in Game 2 as the two teams split a doubleheader in AA Legion baseball action here Sunday.

In the opener, a double by Titus-Will’s Joey Aliff drove in three runs in the seventh, as Centralia came back after entering the inning down 9-4.

Titus-Will and Rochester totalled 20 runs despite having six hits apiece.

“Both teams walked an immense amount of guys,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “You think about the run totals, it was a lot of walks. There were only six hits for both of us. They were timely base hits.”

In the nightcap, Rochester scored three runs in the top of the seventh on the way to a 5-2 win. Brycen Kugan and Aaron Huff each had two hits for Rochester. Centralia’s Noah Thomas also had a pair of hits.

Titus-Will scored their two runs in the final frame.

Ethan Worden pitched a complete game for Rochester after entering Game 1 in the seventh.

“Ethan ended up coming in end of that first game to stop the bleeding,” Quarnstrom said. “He came in and shut the door after the damage had been done. He rolled over into second game and did a phenomenal job. He did a great job commanding the strike zone.”

Titus-Will coach Rex Ashmore said, “We didn’t play very inspired baseball. For us to get better next year we need to come out with more energy.”

Rochester faces Lower Columbia in a home doubleheader today beginning at 3 p.m.

“We played some good teams,” Sobe-Toyota coach Jake LeDuc said. “To go over there and go 2-2 and not have some of our best pitchers available, I’m happy with those results… You always would like to do better, but most everyone who went over there got a lot of at-bats.”

In the 7-5 victory over Hanford on Friday, Drew Forgione and Brady Woodrum each had a pair of hits for Sobe-Toyota.

Riley Christensen pitched six innings for Centralia in the win.
