Legion Baseball: Titus-Will Drops Season Opener to River Ridge

Posted

It was a rough start to the season for Titus-Will here at Wheeler Field on Tuesday as they dropped their summer baseball season opener 7-0 to River Ridge.

The Hawks had nine hits on the day and scored three runs in the first inning before adding another in the third inning. The visitors added two runs to their tally in the sixth and plated an insurance run in the seventh.

Conversely, Titus-Will was only able to amass a single hit while their offense was shutout. Sawyer Kassell was their lone successful batsman, with a double to his credit. Defensively the team committed two errors but Zach Rone pitched the middle innings for the home team and threw enough strikes to keep his coach happy.

“Rone threw very well and for the most part we played pretty good defense behind our pitching,” noted Titus-Will coach Rex Ashmore.

There were other aspects of his team’s initial effort that left the coach wanting, however.

“Our approach at the plate was not what it needs to be for us to be successful. We have a lot of young kids on our summer team and will be moving kids around a lot,” Ashmore explained. “We haven’t done anything since our high school season ended and hopefully will get better as the season goes.”

Titus-Will (0-1) will play a doubleheader at Tumwater on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
