MONTESANO — Rochester stayed with league-leading Montesano, but the hosts came up big in the eighth inning for a 5-4 win in junior American Legion play here Monday night.

Montesano hit three-straight one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

“I thought tonight we did a good job of competing,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “These are the kind of games that we get better at, in terms of getting ourselves ready for next spring, and tonight was a good deal.”

Brock Hawes led off the game with a double and scored Rochester’s first run on a hit from Colton Winters, and finished with three hits while pitching into the seventh inning.

“He kept the hitters off-balance, and had a good changeup going,” Quarnstrom said of Hawes.

Montesano improved to 11-1 in Area 2 South League play, while Rochester dropped to 1-9.

Rochester will host LC Black at 4 p.m. tonight, and will host Aberdeen at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Black Hills at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
