Girls Soccer: Winlock Picks up Second Win of Season

Posted

WINLOCK — Pouring rain couldn’t slow down the Winlock offense, which scored a season-high five goals in a 5-0 victory of nonleague foe Evergreen Lutheran here on Saturday.

Usually the Cardinals’ goalkeeper, Cheleena Squibb led the team with two goals — both in the second half — during Winlock's second victory of the season.

“We continue to improve and it was nice to see us finally finish some of the opportunities we created,” Winlock coach Kevin Schultz said. “Yesterday’s practice was spent mostly working on finishing and it paid off today.”

Jessica Neal — on an assist from Chloe McGeary — and Maggie Howsden scored for Winlock in the first half to put the Cardinals up 2-0 at the break. At that point, Schultz moved Squibb from goalkeeper to forward as the rain continued to ramp up its intensity.

“It was fun allowing Cheleena an opportunity to play in the field and happy for her that she was able to score a couple goals,” Schultz said.

After Squibb scored her goals, Becca Nielson notched the Cardinals’ final goal on an assist from Shanelle Memmott. Makayla Allbritton moved into goal in the second half and picked up two saves.

“Makayla did well in the second half in goal,” Schultz said. “She made a couple saves and didn’t seem nervous at all playing there for the first time this year.”

The coach added that upperclassmen Jazmin Ramirez, Alejandra Sanchez, McGeary and Memmott had good performances out on the field.

“They may not have scored any of the goals themselves but they created a lot of opportunities and a couple of them picked up assists,” Schultz said. “Jessica and Maggie were solid as well. All in all, the whole team played well and hopefully we can build on this.”

Winlock had defeated Evergreen Lutheran 1-0 earlier in the season. The Cardinals (2-8) will host Ocosta on Tuesday.
