Friday's State Track: Olson Wins State Triple Jump Title

CHENEY — Napavine’s Mollie Olson was the first local winner here Friday at the State 1B/2B/1A Track and Field Championships.

Olson, a junior, notched a 36-foot, 5-inch mark in the triple jump, edging out Northwest Christian’s Heidi Sowers (36-0) for first. She also qualified for the 100-meter hurdles with the fastest preliminary time (15.43 seconds).

Adna’s Kenya Lorton (34-05.5) and Emma Manning (33-02.5) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the triple jump.

On the boys side, Pe Ell’s Andrew Schulz finished second in the long jump at 21 feet, 7.5 inches, behind only Lyle/Wishram freshman Brandon Montoya (22-02.25). Mossyrock’s Levi Munoz was fourth at 21-03.

Toledo’s Ally Bacon finished earned third place in girls 2B javelin competition. The junior’s best throw was 126-04.

In Friday’s preliminary action, Mossyrock’s 4x200 and 4x100 girls relay teams — both comprised of Makenzie Barrows, Sarah Lovan, Maleah Nixon Klein and Stephanie Fried — each moved on to the finals, as did the Vikings’ 4x100 boys relay (Sean Johnson, Lucas Johnson, Levi Munoz and Justin Gootgeld) and the 4x400 relay — comprised of the same runners — tied with Northwest Christian-Colbert for the fastest time of the day, 3:29.80.

Adna’s 4x100 girls relay also made the finals (Cierra Swenson, Emma Manning, Kenya Lorton and Devanie Kleemeyer).

Pe Ell’s Tyler Justice and Adna’s Luke Wellander both qualified in the 100 hurdles.

Onalaska’s Mckinzie Pannkuk qualified in the 100 on the girls side.

Napavine’s Conner Locke, Morton-White Pass’ Tristen Storey and Pe Ell’s Andrew Schulz all qualified for the 100 finale. Locke, a senior, had the second-best qualifying time (10.96 seconds) and won the state championship last season. Locke also qualified for the 200 final.



On Thursday, Adna’s Austen Apperson finished second in the 3200, while Onalaska’s Zach Wright was fourth in the same race. Apperson crossed the line in 9:43, 15 seconds behind winner Luke Schilter of Northwest Christian (Lacey), with Wright finishing in 9:59. Both Apperson and Wright are sophomores, and were the only underclassmen in the top 5.

Pe Ell’s Tyler Justice had the best preliminary time in the 300 hurdles by over a second at 40.30. Adna’s Luke Wellander also qualified for the finals.

Olson and Adna’s Tori Lange both qualified for the 300 hurdle finals in 2B girls action.

Both Mossyrock’s Lucas Johnson (52.09 seconds) and Sean Johnson (52.77 seconds) each finished in fourth place in their respective 400-meter dash heats to qualify for today’s final.

Mossyrock’s Nixon Klein also qualified for the 200 final with the third fastest time in her heat at 26.84.

2A Track

TACOMA — Centralia sophomore Anastasia Ulrigg finished 12th in the long jump with a 15-foot, 8.75-inch leap here Friday in the State 2A track championships at Mt. Tahoma High School.

W.F. West’s Erika Brumfield ran a 2:29.57 preliminary time in the 800 meters, but did not advance to the finals.

Bearcat sophomore Megan Flexhaug finished in eighth place in the girls pole vault competition with a best vault of 10-03.
