Friday's Prep Girls Basketball: Winlock Fends Off Naselle

WINLOCK — Addison Hall recorded yet another double-double for the Cardinals in a 44-36 win against Naselle in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.

Hall scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Karlie Jones tallied 12 points and Azhia Camps added seven points.

Jackie Steenerson led the Comets with 12 points.

Winlock led 11-8 after the first quarter but Naselle kept it close and trailed just 21-20 at halftime. The Comets kept up with the Cardinals in the third quarter but Winlock held Naselle to just six points in the fourth quarter to earn the win.

“It might be the first time in a couple years where we scored in double figures in each quarter, that’s a good start. I thought our five starters played a large majority of the game, put two other girls in for moments, but those five girls played their hearts out,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “Azhia (Camps) had an excellent game. We kept them off the free throw line and controlled our fouls much better tonight. I enjoy winning way more fun than losing.”

Winlock (1-1) hosts Tennison Woods College out of Australia at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Centralia Falls to Montesano

MONTESANO — The Tigers dug a big hole early and could never climb out, falling to Montesano 56-37 in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.

Kylie Sharp and Jadyn Hawley each scored 10 points and Carissa Kaut added nine points and 10 rebounds.

McKynnlie Dalan scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs and Zoe Hutchings tallied 12 points.

Montesano led 18-4 after the first quarter and was able to ride that momentum the rest of the game.

“Third game of the week, first week, we struggled to get going. We got in a big hole but I was proud of our girls. We were getting close to getting blown out of the gym,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “We had an 11-11 tie in the second, only lost the third by three, it got better. We got our legs got under us a little bit and once again, I loved how our girls battled all week long.”

Centralia (0-3) hosts Elma on Wednesday.

Onalaska Comes Up Short Against Wahkiakum

ONALASKA — Carmen Cleveland-Barrera recorded a double-double for Onalaska but it wasn’t enough as Wahkiakum held on for a 46-39 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.

Cleveland-Barrera scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds. Eryn Duryea had eight points, Cierra Russ had eight rebounds and three assists and Morgan Hamilton added six steals and four rebounds. Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy commended the play of Hamilton, Russ and Brooklyn Sandridge for stepping up for the Loggers.

Jansi Merz led the Mules with 22 points.

Wahkiakum led 8-6 after the first quarter and maintained a 17-16 lead at halftime. Onalaska stuck around and trailed by just one point after three quarters, but the Mules were able to pull away late for the win.

“I think they played excellent. Cierra Russ did a good job on Mace, one of her best career high school games,” McCoy said. “When we play Wahkiakum, we can get a little scared but they were very confident tonight. A couple of crucial turnovers at the end cost us the game. I’m proud with everyone’s attitude and effort and defensively to hold Wahkiakum to 46 points, it shows a lot for our defense.”

Onalaska (1-1) hosts Rainier on Wednesday in a non-league game.

Vikings Sail Away From Tigers

MOSSYROCK — It was a close game in the first half but the Vikings scored 43 points in the second half to pull away for a 65-34 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.

Andee Nelson led the Vikings with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Hailey Brooks added 11 points and Payton Torrey also scored 11 points to go with eight steals, six rebounds and four assists.

Natalya Marcial scored 17 points to lead Napavine.

Mossyrock led 12-8 at halftime and Napavine won the second quarter to trail just 22-20. It was all Mossyrock in the second half, holding Napavine to seven points in each quarter to cruise to the win.

“We played slow in the first half. We rushed with the press but the second half, we adjusted well and took care of the ball,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “We got some big stops with our press and ran away with it in that second half. Nelson stepped up as a senior, led our team with that big double-double. We just played really well as a team.”

Mossyrock (2-0) travels to Battle Ground on Monday while Napavine (0-2) travels to Toutle Lake on Thursday for a non-league game.
