WINLOCK — A ray of sunshine broke through the gray skies of the Cardinals’ season here Friday afternoon, as Winlock took out its frustrations on visiting Lake Quinault in a 15-5 non-league baseball victory.
It was the first win of the season for Winlock (1-8).
“I was very, very happy for the boys,” said Cardinal coach Jordan Nailon, who noted that his shorthanded squad lost a player earlier in the week to a broken collarbone. “They have been working very hard, and it has not been very much fun sometimes.”
On Friday, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Winlock plated three runs in the first frame and five more in the second, with starting pitcher Kaden Harrington keeping the Elks off balance in a two-hit, 10-strikeout performance.
At the plate, meanwhile, Harrington went 2 for 3 with a double and knocked in four runs, while catcher Nathan Suhrbier rapped out three hits.
Chris Heikkila tallied two base knocks and drove in two runs, and Conor Gilreath had two hits including a double.
“The bottom of the order, those guys got on base ball day, set the table and knocked in runs,” a proud Nailon said afterwards. “Our guys hit well with runners on base, and we also played pretty good defense.”
The Cardinals hit the road to face Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Monday.
Beavers, Spartans Split Doubleheader
FORKS — Tenino won the first game but Forks was able to come from behind and win the second game to earn a split of a 1A Evergreen League baseball doubleheader here on Friday.
The Beavers took Game 1, 10-5. Tenino’s Blake Gubbe pitched 6 ⅓ innings and gave the ball to Ryan Deoskey for the final two outs.
Brewer was 3-for-3 with two doubles and Deoskey was 2-for-4 with a home run for the Beavers.
Tenino scored three runs in the third to tie the game at three. The Beavers took the lead with a run in the fourth and plated five runs in the sixth inning to expand the lead. Forks scored two runs in the seventh.
Forks was able to complete the seventh inning comeback in Game 2 for a 7-6 win. Logan Brewer started on the mound for the Beavers and Abe Nelson pitched the seventh.
Brewer helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and Jesse Perez was also 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Forks tallied two runs in the first but the Beavers answered with five runs in the second. Tenino led 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans rallied with four runs in the seventh to come from behind for the win.
“Brewer threw really well. He comes in and shuts the door. We have a tough time closing out games right now, teams have came back and bit us a couple times in the last few weeks,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said. “We’ve got to just keep plugging and we’ve got to fight our demons. We come into the seventh and can’t shut the door. We need to learn from the last couple weeks and get ready for the end of the season.”
Tenino (5-9, 3-4) hosts Elma on Monday in a league game.
Loggers Roll Past Wildcats
ONALASKA — Onalaska scored nine runs in the third inning to help earn a 16-0 win in three innings over Ocosta in a non-league baseball game here on Friday.
Tristen Lawrence and Tanner McLean combined on the mound to throw a no hitter and had a walk and two batters hit by a pitch.
At the plate, Ashton Haight hit a double and had a walk and three runs. Kyle Hamilton was hit by a pitch, had two walks and three runs and Matt Kurzeika had a double, two walks and three runs for the Loggers.
Onalaska plated three runs in the first and two runs in the second before nine runs in the third. The umpires called the game due to safety concerns with rain picking up in intensity during the game.
Onalaska (9-3, 8-2) hosts Adna on Monday in a Central 2B League doubleheader.
