TOLEDO — Kal Schaplow hit the 1,000-point mark here on Friday as Toledo won 64-52 in a non-league girls basketball game.
Schaplow scored 21 points to lead the Indians. Stacie Spahr had 12 points and nine rebounds and Gracie Madill also recorded 12 points.
Alejandra Cadarso had six points and five rebounds and Marina Smith and Greenlee Clark each tallied four assists.
Kaeley Schultz tallied 28 points for Rainier. Toledo coach Brian Layton noted the impressive defense of Schaplow on Schultz.
“She (Schaplow) guarded her (Schultz) the entire time. She earned those 28,” Layton said. “She played really good defense. It was two of the best girls in the league going at each other.”
The teams were tied at nine after one quarter but Toledo took a 27-21 lead at halftime. Toledo scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to hold off Rainier down the stretch.
The Indians converted 24 of 50 field goals and won the rebounding battle, 25-16.
“They played great. The girls carried out the game plan, hit some timely buckets. We shot with confidence,” Layton said. “Everyone contributed, no matter who was in the game. They stepped up, getting a defensive rebound or getting a stop. I’m really proud of the girls. Rainier is a tough team.”
Toledo (3-1) travels to Longview on Tuesday to take on Mark Morris in a non-league game.
Hurricanes Blow By Tigers
NAPAVINE — Mount Vernon Christian shot 39 percent from the field in order to secure a 46-38 win against Napavine in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.
Napavine’s Natalya Marcial scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Rae Sisson added eight points and six rebounds and Chloe Stewart also had six rebounds.
The Tigers shot 24 percent from the field but won the rebounding battle, 34-24.
Josie Droog led the Hurricanes with 18 points and Kailey Faber tallied 12 points.
Mount Vernon Christian led 12-11 after one quarter and built the lead to 26-18 at halftime. The Hurricanes gained a 13-point lead after three quarters. Napavine held the Hurricanes to just four points in the final frame, but didn’t have enough left to muster a comeback.
“We are still a work in progress in our consistency on what we run both offensively and defensively. I thought we battled a talented Mt. Vernon Christian team to the very end,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “I thought we learned a lot tonight about ourselves and what we need to do to get better.”
Napavine (0-4) is back in action on Saturday against White Swan at 2 p.m.
Centralia Falls to Franklin Pierce
TACOMA — The Tigers dug a hole in the first quarter and were unable to climb out of it entirely in a 41-35 loss to Franklin Pierce in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.
Carissa Kaut had a double-double for Centralia with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kylie Sharp chipped in seven points and eight rebounds and Madelinn Corwin added five points and eight rebounds.
Paradise Dorrough scored 12 points and Zionna Barbe recorded 10 points.
The Cardinals converted 35 percent of their field goals while Centralia shot 22 percent.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter. Centralia fought back in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 20-15.
The Cardinals won the second half, 21-20.
Centralia coach Doug Ashmore was disappointed in the Tigers at the free throw line, converting just 11 of 29 attempts.
“We shoot better when we get to the line and we got to the line 10 more times then they did. We had more shots but we’re still having a hard time getting the ball in the hole,” Ashmore said. “I can’t fault the effort of our kids. We just did a great job of battling.”
Centralia (0-5) hosts Tenino on Wednesday.
Seton Catholic Takes Down Winlock
VANCOUVER — Addison Hall recorded a double-double for the Cardinals but it wasn’t enough as Seton Catholic won 63-44 in a non-league girls basketball game here on Friday.
Hall scored 24 points and had double digit rebounds. Azhia Camps had six points and 10 assists for the Cardinals.
Jasmine Morgan led the Cougars with 18 points. Maddie Willis added 15 points, Emma Watkins tallied 13 points and Katie Willis had 10 points.
Seton Catholic led 15-8 after one quarter and built the lead to 36-21 at halftime. The Cougars outscored the Cardinals 24-23 in the second half.
“They never quit, they didn’t give into the hostility in the gym. Karlie (Jones) got a concussion in the first quarter and Addison (Hall) got injured in the middle of the second quarter,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “I’m happy to get out of there without a ton of injuries to be honest with you. They showed a lot of heart, kept their composure and I got some quality minutes for some of our younger kids.”
Winlock (1-3) travels to Kalama on Monday.
