Friday's Girls Basketball: Tenino Withstands Tigers' Second-Half Comeback

TENINO — A pair of sterling performances from the Schow sisters propelled the hometown Beavers past Centralia by a score of 64-48 in non-league girls basketball here on Friday.

That final tally belies the close nature of the game that was tied at 35-35 with more than half of the third quarter elapsed. However, Tenino never relinquished their lead and led from tip off to the final buzzer thanks in large part to the output of the Beavers tallest set of twins.

Senior playmaker Kaylee Schow finished the contest with a game-high tally of 24 points while Ashley Schow, a freshman post, dropped in 16. Both girls harassed their marks on defense and gathered a heap of rebounds all along the way.

In the early going, though, the basket seemed to have a lid on it for the elder Schow and it was Olivia Hunter putting points on the board for the Beavers. She scored the team’s first 4 points and finished with 9, mostly on putback attempts.

“She did an amazing job in the paint and picked up boards really really well and sometimes i think that goes unnoticed,” said Tenino coach Brandi Thomas of Hunter. “She hustles all the time and that’s one thing we can count on, her, all the time.”

Tenino forced six Tiger turnovers in the first quarter and pair of free throws by Rhian Mathis gave the Beavers a 20-13 advantage after that opening period. Centralia began to show signs of life in the second quarter as Carissa Kaut began to slash and drive to some effect but the Tigers still trailed 33-24 at the half.

Centralia switched things up during the intermission and was able to put together a convincing run in the third quarter. After four minutes they had the game tied at 35-all thanks to a barrage of long balls against a sagging Tenino zone.

On the other end the Tigers were employing a defensive scheme seldom seen in the Hub City.

“We just talked about executing what we do. It showed in that third quarter when we really played our basketball of the season to tie it up. Then it came to the fourth quarter and the first couple of possessions we just kind of lost it,” said Centralia coach Doug Ashmore. “I liked the effort of the girls tonight. We went man and this was the first time we’ve gone man in my five years being here. We’ve got work to do on it but it’s looking better.’

Kaut and Kylie Sharp each had 14 points for Centralia in the losing effort while Kennedy Strophy added 7 points. For the game the Tigers were able to hit on just 15 of 41 field goal attempts and nine of 21 free throws.

Nobody stepped up bigger on defense to stem that Tiger tide than Ashley Schow who shadowed her opponent up and down the court while altering numerous shots and otherwise causing havoc for the Tigers.

“At the end there we were supposed to be face guarding all of them so i was just doing that,” said Ashley Schow. “I try to be an all around player and just help wherever it’s needed.”

Thanks to that defense Tenino was able hang on to a 40-39 lead at the end of the third quarter and they quickly began to push that advantage out in the final frame. A flailing putback by Ashley Schow off of an offensive rebound with 3:25 remaining in the game took the last of the air out of Centralia and gave Tenino a 51-45 edge.

“I think our defensive effort definitely helped and then on offense everyone was contributing and everyone was scoring and I think that really helped with getting open shots for everyone,” said Kaylee Schow.

Rhian Mathis added eight points for the Beavers, who were hyped as a team to down a bigger school from just down the road.

“It’s cool to beat a 2A team. That’s the third 2A team we’ve beaten this year and they’re bigger than us,” said Kaylee Schow. ”Especially since I feel like people look down on Tenino. They don’t think that Tenino’s good at sports, so it’s nice to prove them wrong.”

Tenino (4-1) hosts Stevenson on Tuesday. Centralia (0-4) hosts River Ridge the same night.
